Women's Tennis Turned Back at Endicott, 5-2

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was defeated by host Endicott College, 5-2, this afternoon at South Tennis Courts in Beverly, Mass.

The Lyons slip to 6-10 on the season, while the Gulls complete their season with a 9-11 mark.

Endicott won two of three doubles matches to earn the first point of the dual match. The Gulls won four of six singles contests to earn the match victory.

Sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) was a double-winner to lead Wheaton. She teamed with first year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) for a 7-5 win at third doubles over the Endicott senior duo of Yolanda Mendonca (Albany, N.Y.) and Ana Mar Molina (Sachse, Texas). Wilson also picked up a win at number five singles for the Lyons, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over sophomore Amber Woods (Scarborough, Maine).

Wheaton sophomore Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) also won in singles play for Wheaton with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at number four singles over first year Caroline Sutliffe (Duxbury, Mass.).

The Gulls' senior pairing of Lejla Guster (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Ripley Uyeda (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) put together a 6-1 victory at number one doubles over the Lyon junior tandem of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas). Sutliffe combined with senior Olivia Martinelli (Coral Springs, Fla.) to produce a 6-4 effort over Hollis and Wheaton sophomore Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) at number two doubles.

Brennan won the opening set at sixth singles for Wheaton, but Endicott sophomore Abbey Fleming (Wolfeboro, N.H.) came back to win the next two frames, 6-3, 6-3, to take the match. Ortiz also earned a first set triumph at number three singles, but Martinelli bounced back in dominant fashion, winning the next two sets, 6-0, 6-0, for the Gulls. Haraj-Sai endured a highly competitive three-set match at second singles, but ended up falling in the third and deciding frame, 6-4 to Endicott first year Emily Leclerc (Manchester, N.H.). Leclerc battled to an opening set win by a score of 7-6 (3), before Ortiz knotted the contest with a 6-4 second-set showing.

Guster earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at number one singles for Endicott over Greenlee.

The Lyons return to the courts on Saturday, April 26 when they take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Smith College at 12:00 p.m.
