Men's Tennis Blanks Salve Regina, 7-0

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team blanked host Salve Regina University, 7-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Salve Regina Tennis Courts in Newport, R.I.

The Lyons improve to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in league play, while the Seahawks fall to 0-8 and 0-3.

Wheaton did not drop a game in a sweep of doubles play to earn the first point of the dual match. The Lyons were almost as dominant in singles action, winning every match in straight sets, including four matches where they lost three or fewer games.

Sophomore Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) combined with first year Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) to earn a 6-0 triumph at number one doubles over Salve Regina senior Samuel Middleton (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and junior Jacob Faulise (North Kingstown, R.I.). The result was the same at second doubles for Wheaton sophomores Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) and Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.), who downed senior Alan Guevara (North Providence, R.I.) and first year Nicholas Christina (Southbury, Conn.), 6-0. The sophomore tandem of Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) and Jack Thain (Aberdeen, Scotland) registered a 6-0 decision at third doubles for the Lyons over senior Alexander Colon (Brielle, N.J.) and graduate student Jose Mayen (Cranston, R.I.).

Galligo rolled at number one singles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory for Wheaton over senior Samuel Middleton (Lake Grove, N.Y.). Munoz dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at number three singles over Colon. Van Dyke and first year Daniel Kofman (Hod Ha'sharon, Israel) were both unblemished in their respective singles contests for the Lyons. Van Dyke won 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles over Guevara and Kofman matched that outcome against first year Mike Keating (Tiverton, R.I.) at number six singles.

Murray surrendered just three games in a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at fifth singles for Wheaton over Christina. Berteaux won the opening set, 6-4, at number two singles over Faulise, before battling to a 7-6 decision in the second frame to take the match.

The Lyons return to the courts on Wednesday, April 16 when they head to Babson Park, Mass. to play NEWMAC foe Babson College at 3:00 p.m., while the Seahawks are in action again on April 13 when they travel to Weymouth, Mass. to take on league rival Emerson College at 6:45 p.m.
