Women's Tennis Blanks Clark, 7-0

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team swept through doubles play and won all six singles matches in a 7-0 victory over visiting Clark University (Mass.) this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Cougars fall to 2-10 and 0-3.

Wheaton dropped just three games – total – in three doubles matches to gain the first point of the dual match. The home team's junior duo of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) teamed for a 6-1 win at number one doubles over junior Merielle Kane (Vienna, Maine) and first year Larkin Gardinier (Medford, Mass.). The Lyons had no trouble at number two doubles either, behind the sophomore tandem of Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) with a 6-0 triumph over sophomores Winifred Gakidis (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) and Olivia Shipley (Winchendon, Mass.). Wheaton gained a 6-2 win at number three doubles fueled by junior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) and first year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) over sophomore Varvara Maltseva (Tres Cantos, Mass.) and first year Amanda Keith (Brookfield, Conn.).

The Lyons were just as dominant in singles play with no player dropping more than three games in any set. Greenlee powered past Gardinier in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 at number one singles, while Haraj-Sai defeated Maltseva, 6-2, 6-3, at second singles. Ortiz cruised at number three singles over Shipley, 6-1, 6-3 and Hollis was just as efficient at number four singles with a 6-2, 6-3 effort against Kane. Sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) did not drop a set in a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Gakidkis at fifth singles. Brennan rounded out the singles success for Wheaton with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Keith at number six.

Wheaton returns to the courts on Wednesday, April 2 when it hosts No. 11 Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Clark Tennis Courts at 4:00 p.m., while Clark hosts MIT on April 5 at 10:30 a.m.
