BOSTON, Mass. — Sophomore attacker Georgia Qua (Suffield, Conn.) notched career highs in points (six) and goals (five), while senior attacker Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) also scored five goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team to a 19-9 victory over host Emerson College this evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Rotch Field in Boston, Mass.
The Lyons win their fifth in a row and improve to 5-3 overall and a perfect 2-0 in league play, while the Lions dip to 3-4 and 0-3.
Wheaton owned a 43-28 shot advantage and won 18 of 30 draw controls.
The Lyons owned an 8-5 margin at the intermission, before scoring six times, while holding Emerson without a score in the third quarter to take a 14-5 lead and put the game out of reach.
Qua added a ground ball, while Finnie picked up a pair of ground balls, caused a turnover and won a pair of draw controls for Wheaton. Finnie now has 178 career points to move into eighth on the all-time list for the Lyons. Junior attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) racked up a career-high six assists for the fifth-highest single-game total in school history. She also added a goal and three draw controls. Senior attacker Sophie Gromala (Killingworth, Conn.) scored three times and added a ground ball, while classmate Gabs Smart (Oakland, Maine) netted a pair of goals, picked up four ground balls, caused two turnovers and won five draw controls. Sophomore goalie Jenna Langan (Lincoln, R.I.) made 12 saves for the Lyons.
Senior attacker Callie Krosin (Pikesville, Md.) led the Lions with four goals in addition to an assist and senior midfielder Ava Selby (Boonsboro, Md.) contributed with two goals, an assist, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control. Sophomore middie Ava DelliCompagni (Coatesville, Pa.) registered a goal, two assists, four ground balls, four draw controls and a caused turnover, while first year midfielder Laina Gustafson (Cross Plains, Wis.) picked up five ground balls, caused a pair of turnovers and won four draw controls. Junior keeper Ellie Spotts (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) came up with 10 saves.
Wheaton opened the game with three of the first four goals, including a marker from Chamberlin with 7:02 left in the first quarter to give the visitors a 3-1 lead. Krosin scored with just 19 ticks left on the first period clock to cut the deficit to 3-2 for Emerson.
Again, the Lyons wasted no time with their offense to start the quarter, going on a 4-1 run, fueled by a pair of scores from Qua, to increase their lead to 7-3 with 5:09 to go in the second quarter. Dellicompagni and first year attack Laura Lovell (Norwalk, Conn.) tallied back-to-back goals to pull the Lions within 7-5 with 2:10 showing on the second quarter clock. Gromala scored the final goal of the half for Wheaton, with the benefit of an extra player, to give the Lyons an 8-5 halftime lead.
Qua scored three times in the third quarter to spark a 6-0 output for Wheaton in the third period and give the Lyons a 14-5 cushion heading into the final quarter of play.
Krosin scored three of the game's next four goals to begin the fourth quarter for Emerson and reduce the margin to 16-8 at the 5:27 mark of the quarter. The Lyons closed out the game with three of the final four markers of the night, including a pair from Finnie and first year midfielder Claudia Shoemaker's (Woodstock, Vt.) first collegiate goal to give Wheaton a double-digit win.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they host NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 p.m. on Nordin Field, while the Lions head to Babson Park, Mass. to take on No. 14 Babson College at 3:30 p.m. on the same day.
