NORTON, Mass. – Junior attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) netted a career-high four goals and junior goalie Katie Geis (Duxbury, Mass.) allowed just five goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team over visiting Mount Holyoke College, 17-5, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons win their sixth straight game for their longest success streak since the 2015 campaign when they strung seven victories together. Wheaton improves to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in league play, while the MHC Lyons fall to 3-6 and 1-3.
The Lyons outshot Mount Holyoke, 30-18, including 10-2 in the third quarter, and won 17 of 25 draw controls. MHC committed 20 turnovers and Wheaton held its guests to a 12-21 success rate on the clear.
Chamberlin added a ground ball to her day for the Lyons. Geis stopped eight shots for the afternoon. Senior midfielder Gabs Smart (Oakland, Maine) tallied five points with three goals and two assists to go with three ground balls and a game-high nine draw controls. She was one of six players with multiple goals scored for the home team. Sophomore attacker Georgia Qua (Suffield, Conn.) scored a pair of goals and added an assist and a ground ball. Junior midfielder Sara Spielman Norwalk, Conn.) chipped in with two goals, two ground balls and a caused turnover, while senior attacker Megan Cuddy (Natick, Mass.) registered her first career multi-goal outing with a pair of goals.
First year midfielder Juliana Spaulding (Wakefield, Mass.) led Mount Holyoke with three goals in addition to picking up a ground ball and winning a draw control. Junior attacker Emi Bisson (Chester, Conn.) tallied two points, including a goal and added a ground ball and three draw controls. Junior attack Elle Mader (Cincinnati, Ohio) also scored for MHC. First year keeper Valeria Bolanos (Newington, Conn.) turned away seven shots for Mount Holyoke.
Senior attacker Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal for Wheaton just 78 seconds into the game. Spaulding answered just 27 seconds later to knot the game at 1-1 for MHC. The Lyons closed out the quarter with five of the final six markers, including two from Qua and a pair of Chamberlin, to give Wheaton a 6-2 margin after one quarter of play. Mader scored for Mount Holyoke during the stretch.
First year middie Emma-Jane Parsons (Oakland, Maine) and Spaulding traded the only goals scored in the second quarter, before the Lyons took a 7-3 lead into the intermission.
Wheaton outscored Mount Holyoke by a 6-1 count in the third quarter to increase its cushion to 13-4. Chamberlin netted two more goals during the period, while Bisson netted the visitors' only goal of the quarter with a player advantage.
The Lyons controlled the fourth quarter as well, scoring four of the five goals in the period, including two from Smart and Cuddy, sandwiched around a marker from Spaulding for MHC.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, April 2 when it hosts NEWMAC rival Wellesley College on Nordin Field at 7:00 p.m., while MHC hosts Salem State University on April 1 at 6:00 p.m.
