Box Score HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomores Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) were both double-winners to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team over host Colby-Sawyer College, 4-3, this afternoon at the Boss Tennis Center on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.
The Lyons improve to 4-6 on the season, while the Chargers fall to 9-6.
Wheaton won two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point in the dual match and took three singles matches for the win.
Haraj-Sai combined with Hollis to earn a win at number two doubles for the Lyons, downing Colby-Sawyer senior Isabella Gutierrez Avendaño (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and sophomore Maria Espinosa Lopez (Merida, Mexico), 6-4.
Haraj-Sai overcame a first set loss at number two singles to first year Sky Jara (South Hamilton, Mass.) and won the final two frames, 6-3, 10-4 for the match victory. Hollis won in straight sets at fourth singles over senior Elise Hogan (Duxbury, Mass.), 6-4, 6-3.
Wheaton's junior tandem of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) outlasted Jara and Hogan, 7-6, at number one doubles to give the Lyons the doubles point.
First year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) won at fifth singles for Wheaton over Gutierrez Avendaño, taking the opening set, 6-4, before grinding out a 7-6 (6) second frame win to take the match for the visitors.
Sophomore Payton Dugan (Vincennes, Ind.) earned a 7-6, 6-2 win at number one singles for the Chargers over Greenlee. Espinosa Lopez posted a 6-4, 6-3 triumph for Colby-Sawyer over Ortiz at third singles.
The Lyons return to the courts on Saturday, March 29 when they host Clark University on Clark Tennis Courts in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at 2:30 p.m., while the Chargers take on Hartwick College on March 30 at 12:00 p.m. in Bennington, Vt.
