WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior second baseman Tommy Beauregard's (Salem, Mass.) RBI single in the top of the ninth broke a 6-6 tie, lifting the Wheaton (Mass.) baseball team to an 8-6 win over host University of Hartford this afternoon at Fiondella Field in West Hartford, Conn.
The Lyons even their record at 6-6, while the Hawks drop to 7-9 on the season.
Sophomore center fielder Robbie Lamond (North Kingstown, R.I.) added an insurance run in the ninth to close the scoring for Wheaton.
Junior shortstop Ray Toth (Granby, Mass.) was the only Lyon with multiple hits as he finished 3-4 with a triple and drove in a run to lead a Wheaton offensive attack that saw eight different players hit safely and seven different Lyons drive in a run in the win. Wheaton finished with 11 hits.
The Lyons took a 3-0 lead in the second on an RBI ground out by sophomore catcher Tyler Bellan (Franklin, Mass.), an RBI triple by Toth and run-scoring single by first year right fielder Dwayne Burgo Jr. (Taunton, Mass.).
Hartford answered immediately, tying the game in the bottom of the second, as junior center fielder Jackson Ciccione (Danbury, Conn.) and graduate student designated hitter Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) had RBI singles to tie the game at 3-3.
The Hawks took the lead 4-3 in the third on an RBI double by Ciccione.
The Lyons tied the game in the fourth and took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on an RBI ground out by senior left fielder Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.).
Hartford regained the lead with two runs in the seventh as Ciccione tied the game with an RBI double before junior catcher John Russell (Eastchester, N.Y.) delivered an RBI single, giving the Hawks a 6-5 lead.
The Lyons tied the game 6-6 on an RBI ground out by sophomore designated hitter Nick Ayres (Duxbury, Mass.) in the eighth.
Junior right-hander Jack Feltovic (Hadley, Mass.) got the win in relief for Wheaton, allowing just one hit to improve to 1-0 on the season before senior southpaw Josh Fischer (Hopkington, Mass.) picked up his second save of the season, pitching a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
Sophomore shortstop JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) was 4-5 to lead Hartford while Ciccione had three hits including a pair of doubles and drove in three runs for the Hawks, who finished with 15 hits.
Sophomore Sam Smith (0-1) (Branford, Conn.) took the loss for Hartford, allowing three runs in 1 ? innings.
The Lyons remain in West Hartford for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch today against Keene State College. The Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they host Keene State at noon.
