NORTON, Mass. — First year midfielder Emma-Jane Parsons (Oakland, Maine) netted a career-high four goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team over visiting Emmanuel College (Mass.), 13-10, this evening on Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons win their fourth straight game to improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Saints dip to 3-4.
Wheaton held a 25-20 shot advantage and its defense was extremely pesky, limiting Emmanuel to just a 9-18 success rate in clear attempts. The Saints also committed 19 turnovers in the game.
Wheaton jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one quarter of play, before Emmanuel potted four straight markers to pull even and was tied again at 6-6 in the second quarter. The Lyons led by as many as five goals midway through the fourth quarter, before coming away with the victory.
Parsons added two ground balls and a caused turnover to her night for Wheaton. Senior attacker Sophie Gromala (Killingworth, Conn.) finished with four points, including three goals to go with a pair of ground balls, while sophomore attack Georgia Qua (Suffield, Conn.) and senior midfielder Gabs Smart (Oakland, Maine) each contributed with two goals and an assist apiece. Smart also added five ground balls and caused two turnovers. First year goalie Averie Walton (Cumberland, R.I.) turned away five of 11 shots in 39:19 of play. Junior starting keeper Katie Geis (Duxbury, Mass.) stopped two of six shots in the opening 20:41 of play.
Senior midfielder Dejaliyah Srimouksavanh (Portsmouth, N.H.) led all players with seven points on five goals and two assists in addition to a pair of ground balls for the Saints. First year midfielder Ella Stein (Ipswich, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and assisted on another in addition to picking up a ground ball and causing a turnover and junior middie Ella Marschitz (Naperville, Ill.) scored twice and added a ground ball. Senior goalie Isabella Thomas (Miami, Fla.) made two saves for the visitors.
Stein found Srimouksavanh for a goal to pull Emmanuel even at 6-6 with 3:55 to play in the second quarter. Parsons and Gromala scored in a span of 78 seconds to give the Lyons an 8-6 lead before the horn sounded at the end of the half.
Marschitz scored just 46 seconds into the second half to cut the deficit to 8-7 for the Saints, but Wheaton scored the final three goals of the quarter, including a marker from junior attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) with just 13.7 seconds left in the period to give the Lyons an 11-7 margin heading into the final quarter of play.
Srimouksavanh tallied her final goal of the night and team-leading 13th of the season to close the margin to 11-8 at the 12:24 mark of the quarter for Emmanuel. Parsons and Gromala answered with consecutive goals to give Wheaton its largest lead at 13-8 with 9:21 showing on the fourth quarter clock.
Stein netted a pair of advantage goals to end the match for the Saints.
Srimouksavanh opened the evening's scoring with an Emmanuel goal coming just 50 ticks into the contest. The Lyons ripped off the next five goals, including two from Qua and a marker with just 9.1 seconds left from Smart to give the home team a 5-1 cushion.
The Saints opened the second quarter with four unanswered goals, including two from Srimouksavanh, to pull Emmanuel even at 5-5 with eight minutes to play in the opening half.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, March 26 when it travels to Boston, Mass. to take on Emerson College in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at 6:00 p.m., while the Saints host Bridgewater State University on March 22 at 3:00 p.m.
