Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to host No. 15 Tufts University to open the spring campaign this afternoon at Gantcher Sports Center in Medford, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 1-4 on the season, while the Jumbos, who are ranked in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, improve to a perfect 3-0.
Tufts swept through doubles play to gain the first point of the dual match, before winning all six singles contests.
The Wheaton junior tandem of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) fell to juniors Rachel Cranley (Hertfordshire, England) and first year Melanie Woodward (Memphis, Tenn.), 6-3, at number one for the Jumbos. Sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) teamed with first year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.), at number three doubles in a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Tufts junior Steffy Jullian (Escazu, Costa Rica) and sophomore Evelina Anastasi (Limassol, Cyprus) to give the Jumbos their second doubles victory and the opening point of the match. The Lyon sophomore pairing of Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) was defeated by Tufts senior Sophie Wax (Newton, Mass.) and first year Ryan Wuhrman (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), 6-0 at second doubles.
Greenlee took three games off of Wax at number one singles in a 6-2, 6-1 loss, while Haraj-Sai fell to first year Nadia Khera (Houston, Texas) at number two doubles, 6-2, 6-0.
Ortiz was upended at number three singles by Jumbo first year Brooklyn Bindas (Rochester, Mass.), 6-1, 6-0. Wilson also won a game in singles play in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat to Jullian at fifth singles, while Brennan downed at number six singles by Wuhrman, 6-1, 6-0. Tufts clinched the fourth and deciding point of the match with a 6-0, 6-0 result by Anastasi over Hollis at fourth singles.
Wheaton returns to the courts on Sunday, March 9 when it takes on University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in a match to be played at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla. at 3:00 p.m., while the Jumbos host Bryant University later today at 3:00 p.m.
