Women's Tennis Blanks Emerson, 7-0, For First Conference Win

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team swept through both doubles and singles play to earn a 7-0 victory over Emerson College in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play this afternoon at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

The Lyons improve to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Lions dip to 2-8 and 0-2.

All six of Wheaton's players in the lineup were double-winners.

The Lyon junior tandem of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) turned in a 6-3 win at number one doubles over Emerson senior Chase Stinson (San Antonio, Texas) and Abigail Miner (San Diego, Calif.). Wheaton sophomores Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) combined for a 6-3 win at number two doubles over junior Carlson Jones (Cleveland, Ohio) and sophomore Amaya Briones (Mexico City, Mexico). Sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and first year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) also picked up a 6-3 win for the Lyons at number three doubles over junior Jayden Beverly (Dupont, Wash.) and first year Alisa Pimenova (Kyiv, Ukraine).

Wheaton won all but one of the singles matches in straight sets. Greenlee dropped just three games at number one singles, 6-3, 6-0, over Miner. Ortiz breezed past Pimenova with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at third singles, while Brennan surrendered just one game at number six singles over Beverly, 6-1, 6-0.

Hollis dispatched of Stinson at number four singles, 6-3, 6-3 and Wilson blanked Jones in the opening set at number five singles, before taking a 3-0 lead in the second frame. Wilson won the match when Jones was unable to finish and retired. Haraj-Sai was taken to three sets by Briones. Haraj-Sai won the opening set, 6-4, for the Lyons, before Briones matched her with a 6-4 decision in the middle set. The final frame mimicked how close the first two sets were before Haraj-Sai outlasted her Lion opponent, 10-8, in the tie-breaker.

Wheaton returns to the court on Wednesday, March 19 when it heads to Waltham, Mass. to play Brandeis University at 4:00 p.m., while the Lions travel to Cambridge, Mass. on March 14 at 10:00 a.m. to play Massachusetts Institute of Technology action in NEWMAC play.
