Men's Tennis Earns First NEWMAC Win in 5-2 Decision over Emerson

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team showed superior depth in a 5-2 victory over Emerson College in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play this afternoon at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

The Lyons improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Lions fall to 4-8 and 0-2.

Wheaton won two of three doubles matches to win the first point of the dual match and earned four wins in singles play for the win.

The sophomore duo of Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) won at number two doubles for the Lyons over junior Noah Mesaros (Boise, Idaho) and Cameron McAllister (San Diego, Calif.), 6-3. Wheaton first year Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) and sophomore Jack Thain (Aberdeen, Scotland) also scored a 6-3 win at third doubles over Emerson senior Pete Sevikul (Bangkok, Thailand) and sophomore Finn Leeves-Coben (Malibu, Calif.). 

Munoz rolled through number three singles with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Sevikul. Van Dyke dropped just two games with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over McAllister. 

Murray and Thain did their part as well. Murray put together a 6-2, 6-4 effort over Mesaros at number five singles, while Thain took down Leeves-Coben at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-2.

The Lions gained their two points at the top of the lineup. Sophomore Filippo Nocchi (Pontedera, Italy) overcame Lyon sophomore Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) at first singles, 6-4, 6-4. Emerson first year Connor Leung (Mercer Island, Wash.) delivered with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Wheaton sophomore Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France).

Filippo and Leung also combined for an impressive 6-1 win at number one doubles over Galligo and Berteaux.

The Lyons return to the courts when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday, March 22 to take on NEWMAC foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 1:00 p.m., while the Lions play Boston rival Suffolk University on March 21.
