Softball Falls to Hiram, 7-1

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team gave up six unanswered runs in a 7-1 loss to Hiram University this afternoon at Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. as part of The Spring Games.

The Lyons drop to 4-2 on the season, while the Terriers even their record at 2-2.

Hiram rapped out 10 hits, while holding Wheaton to just two.

Each team scored a single run in the first inning, before the Terriers added two in the third, three in the sixth and one in the seventh for the difference in the game.

Sophomore catcher Emma Boucher (Derry, N.H.) was 1-3 for the Lyons, while first year third base Sangeeta Vaidya (Sunnyvale, Calif.) was 1-2. Sophomore starting pitcher Sofia De La Rosa (Middle Village, N.Y.) suffered her first loss of the year to drop to 2-1 after giving up seven runs on 10 hits  and a pair of walks to go with 10 strikeouts in six and a third innings pitched.

Senior starting pitcher Darian Kanno (Mililani, Hawaii) led Hiram from both the pitching circle and the plate. She allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks, while fanning seven batters in seven complete innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. She was also 3-3 with three runs batted in, a home run, a double and two runs scored. Sophomore third base Hannah Marlow (Huntsville, Ohio) also clouted a homer and smacked a double to go with two runs scored and a pair of runs batted in during a 2-4 effort at the plate. Junior center fielder Danielle Robles (Highland, Calif.) contributed by going 1-3 with a run scored, a double and a stolen base.

The Terriers cracked the scoring column first with a run in the opening frame. Senior shortstop Fayth Kawamura (Honolulu, Hawaii) singled to right field before Kanno smacked a two-out RBI double to center to make it 1-0. Wheaton took advantage of a Hiram miscue in the bottom of the inning to score a run and pull even after one inning of play. Senior left fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) reached on an error, stole second base, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior center fielder Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.) to make it 1-1 after one inning of play.

The Terriers added a pair of two-out runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 margin. The Lyons got the first two outs of the frame before Marlow doubled and Kanno homered over the left field fence and just like that it was a two-run lead for Hiram.

The Terriers tacked on another run in the sixth to take a 4-1 margin. Kanno stroked a single to center field, before junior Megan Moser (Kent, Ohio) ripped a double down the right field line. Kanno scampered home ahead of a sacrifice from first year Ari Torres (Ontario, Calif.) to increase Hiram's lead to 4-1.

Hiram added three more runs in the seventh to put distance between itself and Wheaton. Robles opened the seventh with a double to right center and came around to score on a single down the left field line off the bat of sophomore third base Daynna Mekaru (Kaneohe, Hawaii). One out later, Marlow deposited a pitch over the fence in center field to cap the scoring at 7-1.

The Lyons return to the diamond tomorrow when they take on Carlow University (Pa.) at 11:15 a.m., while the Terriers play Pennsylvania State University Behrend on March 13 at 12:15 p.m. in Bartow, Fla.
