Rohon Drives in Four to Lead Softball over Carlow, 10-4

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Senior right fielder Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.) knocked in four runs to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to a 10-4 victory over Carlow University (Pa.) today at Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. as part of The Spring Games.

The Lyons improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Celtics slip to 1-5.

Wheaton collected a season-high 17 hits in the game and scored all 10 runs after the third inning.

Rohon hit a two-run home run and was 2-4 on the day with a run scored, while junior first base Peyton Blankenheim-Brown (Rio Linda, Calif.) drove in three runs with a three-run homer and scored twice for the Lyons. Junior catcher Riley Dolan (Coram, N.Y.) was 3-3 with a double and a run scored and sophomore second base Taylor Barry (Hadley, Mass.) was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore starting pitcher Sofia De La Rosa (Middle Village, N.Y.) picked up the win to improve to 3-1 after giving up four runs (one earned) on nine hits and two walks, while striking out eight in seven complete innings.

Carlow junior Tatum Wiggs (Boron, Calif.) drove in three runs behind a 2-4 effort and senior second base Fran Beighley (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was 3-4 with a double and a run scored. First year relief pitcher Anna Schumacher (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was saddled with the loss to dip to 0-3 on the season after allowing five runs on eight hits to go with a strikeout in two and a third innings of work.

Wheaton broke a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. First year third base Sangeeta Vaidya (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and senior left fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) each came through with run-scoring singles during the inning to give the Lyons the lead for good.

Wheaton strung together seven hits to start the seventh inning as part of a five-run frame to give the Lyons a 10-3 advantage. Senior center fielder Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.) and sophomore shortstop Ella Molinari (Grafton, Mass.) each singled to open the inning, before Blankenheim-Brown launched her first home run of the season over the left field fence to increase Wheaton's lead to 8-3. Dolan first year Madi Miller (MIddle Village, N.Y.) and Barry all reached via the single to load the bases with no outs, before Rohon laced a two-run single up the middle to give the Lyons double-digit runs.

Wiggs got a run back for the Celtics with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 10-4, but it was the final run of the contest.

Wiggs was the catalyst in the first inning for Carlow as well, coming through with a two-out, two-run single to give the Celtics a 2-0 lead.

Wheaton scored three times in the fourth to take a 3-2 edge. Barry put the Lyons on the board with a run-scoring single to left field, before Rohon followed with a two-run blast over the center field fence to give the Lyons a one-run lead.

Carlow got the run back in the bottom of the fifth when Beighley doubled and later scored on an infield error to knot the game at 3-3.

Wheaton returns to Fortune Road to play DeSales University at 1:30 p.m., while the Celtics Westminster College on March 13 at 1:45 p.m.
