ORLANDO, Fla. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team fell to University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 7-0, this afternoon at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.
The Lyons dip to 1-5 on the season, while the Crusaders improve to 2-2.
Mary Hardin-Baylor won all three doubles matches to gain the first point of the dual match, before sweeping all six singles contests.
Wheaton's junior duo of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) suffered a 6-2 loss at number one doubles to the UMHB sophomore tandem of Jolin Ha (Sugar Land, Texas) and Bailee Lane (Lindale, Texas). Lyon sophomores Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) were downed by the Crusader junior combo of Emily Higgs (San Antonio, Texas) and Erin Kittredge (McKinney, Texas), 6-2, at second doubles. Wheaton sophomore Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and first year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) fell at number three doubles to junior Lori Bryan (Allen, Texas) and first year Abbie Hughes, (Austin, Texas), 6-4.
Wilson battled at number four singles for the Lyons, rebounding from a 6-1 opening set loss to Lane, before taking the middle frame, 6-3. Lane closed out the match with a 6-0 third-set win. Ha won the opening set at number three singles for UMHB, but Hollis looked to extend the match at 6-6, before Ha secured the second frame at 7-6.
Kittredge won in straight sets for Mary Hardin-Baylor over Greenlee at first singles, 6-0, 6-3, before Bryan earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory at number two singles over Haraj-Sai. Higgs also scored in singles play for the Crusaders with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Brennan at number five singles.
Wheaton returns to the courts on Monday, March 10 when it takes on Covenant College (Ga.) at Sylvan Lake Tennis Center in Sanford, Fla. for a 12:00 p.m. start, while UMHB plays Washington College (Md.) on the same day in Orlando, Fla. at 10:00 a.m.
