NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team swept all six singles matches and grabbed the doubles point for a 7-0 victory over visiting Endicott College in the spring season opener for both schools at Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 1-3 on the season, while the Gulls fall to 0-2.
Wheaton sophomores Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) and first year Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) were all double-winners for the Lyons. Wheaton won two of three doubles matches to gain the opening point of the contest.
Galligo and Berteaux combined for a 6-3 victory at number one doubles over the Endicott junior duo of Conrad Kadel (Heidelberg, Germany) and Antonio Marsallo (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). Kadel battled to a 7-6 (3) first set win over Galligo, but the Wheaton second-year settled down to blitz past Kadel, 6-1, 6-1 in the final two frames. Berteaux had no trouble dispatching of Gull senior George Danes (Old Lyme, Conn.), 6-0, 6-0.
Munoz paired with senior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) for a 6-4 triumph at third doubles over Endicott senior Patrick Johnson (Beverly, Mass.) and first year Eric Scalici (Essex Fells, N.J.). Munoz picked up his first collegiate singles win at number three over Marsallo, cruising to a 6-2, 6-4 decision.
The final three of the Lyons lineup all ground out three-set wins for the home squad. Sophomore Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) overcame a 6-4 opening frame setback to first year Gull, Ethan Hopman (Summit, N.J.), but the Wheaton number four took the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4 for the win. Classmate Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) grabbed the first and third sets for his victory over Endicott junior Aaron Terpko (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Van Dyke opened with a 6-2 result, before Terpko evened the match with a 6-3 effort. Van Dyke closed it out in dominant fashion at 6-1. Sophomore Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) overcame a 7-6 opening set defeat to gut out a 6-4 second frame win, before closing out with a 10-4 effort in the final frame over Gull sophomore Spencer Smith (Albany, N.Y.).
Endicott pulled out a win at number two doubles, courtesy of Terpko and Danes overcoming Murray and Van Dyke for Wheaton.
The Lyons return to action on March 9 when they take on University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Orlando, Fla, while the Gulls head to New London, Conn. on February 22 to play United States Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 p.m.
