Women's Basketball Picks Up First Win at Rivier in OT, 84-81

NASHUA, N.H. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's basketball team required some extra time as they downed Rivier College 84-81 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in the Muldoon Center.

The Lyons' first win of the season moved them to 1-2 on the year, while the Raiders fell to 0-3 on the season with the loss.

Senior guard Kiki Walters (Fleetwood, Pa.) led the Lyons with 23 points and five steals while junior forward Cheyenne Colbert (Brookline, N.H.) netted 17 points and pulled down five rebounds. Walters had a very productive day at the stripe, sinking 13 of her 16 free throw attempts.

Sophomore guard Gianna Donato (Tyngsborough, Mass.) paced the floor with 30 points on 13-26 shooting from the field. Fellow sophomore Sydney Perry (Windsor, Vt.) had a solid scoring day as well, putting up 24 points with 16 rebounds for a double-double.

The game started well for Wheaton, as Colbert knocked down an early three-pointer in the first quarter to give the Lyons a 13-6 lead. Senior forward Regan Keyter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored a layup before junior guard Mary Claire McClintock (Essex Junction, Vt.) sank both of her free throws to put the Lyons ahead 17-7. A steal-and-score from Walters saw the lead increase to 19-7, and first year forward Darlene Tashobya (Kampala, Uganda) knocked down a jump shot at the close of the frame to give her team a 26-9 lead going into the second.

Senior guard Madeline Duwe (Greenville, S.C.) scored the first points of the quarter for Wheaton in the second, and the Lyons controlled their double-digit advantage for nearly the entire frame. A few Rivier three-pointers saw the home team come within seven points of the Lyons, but a layup by Tashobya and a steal-and-score by McClintock drove the Wheaton lead back to 12 points at 39-27. First year guard Sydney MacCalla (Middletown, N.Y.) scored the final points of the quarter for Wheaton, giving it a 43-32 lead at halftime thanks to a layup on the break with 90 seconds to go.

Keyter opened up the second half with a layup, and once again the Lyons were off and running. They controlled the entire quarter once again, allowing Rivier to only come as close as seven points for the second quarter in a row. After the Raiders cut into the Wheaton lead, MacCalla and Walters each made a driving layup to regain the double-digit advantage. Keyter took over the court in the last minute of the third quarter, scoring back-to-back buckets to give Wheaton a 63-48 lead going into the final frame.

In contrast to the prior two quarters, the home side scored the first points of the fourth quarter. Walters wiped away their opening score with a layup and a successful free throw bid after she was fouled. Donato came alive on the other end of the court, and made four straight buckets to bring the Raiders within eight. Walters scored to put Wheaton back in front by 10, but Donato answered back with a three-pointer. Donato proved to be too much to handle as she scored twice more to make it a five point game with 1:55 on the clock. Keyter scored a layup in the paint, but that would be the final basket in regulation for Wheaton. Perry scored a layup, and a foul with just 12 seconds left would see the Raiders tie the game to force overtime.

The Lyons relied on the efforts of Walters in the five-minute added period, as she opened the overtime period with a pair of makes from the free throw line. Perry tipped in a missed layup to tie it once more, but Colbert and McClintock scored back-to-back layups to regain the multi-possession lead. Rivier answered with a three pointer, and Donato followed with a layup to give the Raiders their first lead of the entire game at 81-80. With 20 seconds to play, Colbert scored a tough layup through contact to gain control of the lead for her team, and Walters sank both of her free throws in the final 13 seconds to give Wheaton the win by a final score of 84-81.

The Lyons return to Emerson Gymnasium this Tuesday as they host Framingham State University on November 18th at 6:00 p.m. Rivier will stay in the Granite State as it takes on Brandeis University on Tuesday, November 18th at 6:00 p.m.
