NORTON, Mass. — Seniors Regan Keyter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) (23) and Kiki Walters (Fleetwood, Pa.) (19) and junior Cheyenne Colbert (Brookline, N.H.) (23) combined to score 65 points and lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's basketball team over visiting Framingham State University, 79-75, this evening at Emerson Gymnasium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Rams slip to 2-2.
Wheaton shot a season-high 52.5% (32-61) from the floor and made the most of 15 Framingham State turnovers, outscoring the Rams, 23-6, in points off turnovers. Framingham's work on the boards helped keep it in the game with a 43-33 advantage, including 17 on the offensive glass that translated into a 21-8 margin in second chance points.
Keyter, Walter and Colbert were all efficient from the floor for the Lyons. Keyter was 9-15 from the field, including 2-4 from three-point range and finished a rebound short of a double-double with nine and added two assists and a steal. Walters was 8-12 shooting in addition to four rebounds, two steals and a game-high five assists and Colbert knocked down five of seven three-point tries as part of a 8-11 effort from the floor and added seven rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal. Both Keyter and Colbert recorded career-highs for scoring.
Sophomore guard Jacqueline Schels (Hamburg, N.J.) led all scorers with a career-high 33 points, including a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line for the Rams. She added 11 boards for her second straight outing with 20-plus points and double-digit rebounds and also came up with a steal. Senior guard Kiara Cerruti (Canton, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points, three rebounds and an assist and first year guard Zaria Anderson (New Bedford, Mass.) netted 10 points, pulled down three rebounds, handed out an assist and came up with a steal.
Wheaton opened the game with a commanding 17-3 lead over the first 3:46 of play, fueled by five points from Walters and a pair of three-balls from Colbert. Anderson knocked down a triple for Framingham State to stop an 11-0 Lyon run and pull the visitors to within 17-6. Wheaton picked up where it left off, closing out the first quarter with an 11-4 stretch, led by seven points from Colbert, to give the home team a comfortable 28-10 cushion.
The Rams' Abigail Martin (Hanson, Mass.) scored the first six points of the second quarter to cut the margin to 28-16 with 8:48 showing on the second quarter clock, but Keyter countered for the Lyons with the next five points to push the lead to 33-16 with 8:13 left in the quarter. Junior guard Mary Claire McClintock (Essex Junction, Vt.) hit a jumper off a turnover to maintain Wheaton's lead at 39-23 with 3:15 to play in the first half.
Anderson and Schells later drilled back-to-back threes to cap an 8-2 burst for Framingham State to bring it to within 41-31 with just under two minutes to play. Martin sank one of two free throws for the final point of the first half to make it 43-32 at the intermission.
Senior forward Kelsey Yelle (South Easton, Mass.) made a layup less than two minutes into the third quarter to get the visitors under double-digits at 45-36, but Keyter scored five of the next six points to increase the Lyons' lead to 50-37 with 7:15 to go in the quarter. Walters kept it a 13-point advantage at 54-41 with a layup at the 5:07 mark, before Schels sparked a 15-4 run, with seven points, to pull the Rams within 58-56 before the end of the third quarter.
Cerruti drained a trifecta 52 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it a one-point game for Framingham State at 60-59, but it was as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. Cerruti came through again with a jumper outside the paint with 6:10 left in the contest to cut the margin to 67-64 for the Rams.Wheaton regrouped and put together a 7-2 run, including five points from Colbert, to give the home team a 74-66 advantage with 3:50 remaining in the game. Framingham State wouldn't back down as Schels put the Rams on her back with all seven points for a 7-2 stretch that cut the Lyons' margin to 76-73, but Wheaton held off its guests for the rest of the contest.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, November 22 when they host Suffolk University at Emerson Gymnasium for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off, while Framingham State heads to Newton, Mass. to take on Lasell University on November 21 at 7:00 p.m.
