Women's Tennis Competes on Day One at NEWITT

NORTHAMPTON/AMHERST, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team saw two of its tandems post undefeated Day One records at the New England Women's Tennis Invitational Tournament hosted by Smith College and Amherst College today in Northampton, Mass. and Amherst, Mass., respectively. 

The Lyon senior duo of Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) won both of their pods in the tournament that consists of each player playing a singles match against the other team's duo and a doubles match, while advancing in a best of three situation at the Smith Outdoor Tennis Courts in Northampton, Mass.

Greenlee and Ortiz swept through singles play and added a doubles win to sweep Gordon College's entry in Pool 3 of the C Draw. Greenlee defeated first year Lucille Belval (Avon, Conn.), 8-6, while Ortiz took down sophomore Makayla Otey (Greer, S.C.). The Wheaton tandem posted an 8-7 (8-6) triumph over Belval and Otey. 

Greenlee and Ortiz went on to defeat the Mount Holyoke College sophomore pair of Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) with a pair of singles wins for the Lyons. Greenlee registered an 8-2 win over Smith and Ortiz did her part with an 8-0 result over Vavra. Smith and Vavra tallied their only point with a 7-6 (7-4) doubles win over Greenlee and Ortiz.

Wheaton juniors Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) won a singles and a doubles match to advance past University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), 2-1, in Pool 1 of the C Draw in Northampton, Mass. Hollis defeated senior Lili Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.), 8-2, in singles play, before Hollis and Haraj-Sai combined for a 6-1 triumph over Garcia and sophomore Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.). Rossetti picked up the Blue Jays' only point with an 8-7 (7-3) singles victory over Haraj-Sai.

Hollis picked up her second singles win of the day to help the Lyons overcome Springfield College's duo of senior Alysa Elliott (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) and junior Natalia Peyón (Discovery Bay, Hong Kong). Hollis registered an 8-2 effort over Peyón, before teaming with Haraj-Sai for a 6-0 win over Elliott and Peyón. Elliott picked up the Pride's only point, battling to an 8-7 (9-7) win over Haraj-Sai.

Wheaton was swept in the D Draw against Springfield, 3-0, at the Amherst Tennis Courts in Amherst, Mass. First year Lily Runyan (New Milford, Conn.) was defeated by Ava Shea, 6-0, 6-4 in singles action. Grace Tyler posted a 6-2, 6-0 singles victory for the Pride against Lyon senior Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.). Shea and Tyler combined for a 6-2 triumph over Doiron and Wheaton first year Lydia Branson (Bowdoin, Maine) in doubles play.

The Lyons return to the courts tomorrow for the tournament's second day.
