TRINITY, Conn. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team fell to host Trinity College (Conn.), 196.5-92, this afternoon at Trinity Natatorium in Hartford, Conn.
The Lyons dip to 7-3 on the season, while the Bantams improve to 8-4.
Wheaton won six of 16 events, including both diving and freestyle distance events.
Senior diver Morgen Coughlin-Doyle (Topsham, Maine) dominated on both boards for Wheaton, winning the one-meter board with an 11-dive set school-record score of 443.93 points to supplant her own previous standard of 436.60 set last year on February 23. She also placed first on the three-meter board with a tally of 457.51 points.
Senior Katie Walz (Bellevue, Wash.) won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.09 for the Lyons and added a runner-up finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 25.06 to give her 13 points for the meet. Junior Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.) finished with 12 points, including a top finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:21.30 and a third-place effort in the 200-yard butterfly.
Wheaton senior Reese Hartmann (Grand Rapids, Mich.) touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke for a time of 2:07.80 to establish a new Trinity Natatorium record, while finishing fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 25.74. Junior Vivian Van Holland (Excelsior, Minn.) clocked in at 10:50.50 to win the 1000-yard freestyle and classmate Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.71) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle.
Junior Niamh Kastner (Williamsburg, Va.) and sophomore Charlotte Murphree (Hixson, Texas) each won a pair of events to lead Trinity. Kastner won both butterfly races with a time of 57.95 in the 100-yard race and 2:07.34 in the 200-yard event, while Murphree owned the breaststroke race with winning times of 1:04.35 in the 100 and 2:18.66 in the 200-yard race.
Sophomore Alexandra Snyder (Saint Louis, Mo.) racked up 17 points with a first-place showing in the 200-yard individual medley on a mark of 2:13.93 and added second-place finishes in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke for the Bantams. Senior Isabelle Tagliaferro (Bedford, N.H.) contributed with 12 points after winning the 50-yard freestyle with a 24.96 clip in addition to a third-place effort in the 100-yard butterfly. Junior Rachel Kim (Leonia, N.J.) swam the fastest mark in the 100-yard backstroke (58.83) and was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke and sophomore Rachel Lundy (Nassau, Bahamas) topped the field in the 200-yard freestyle behind a time of 1:57.16 to go with a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.
Trinity won both relays as well, closing the meet with a time of 3:36.38 in the 400-yard freestyle, behind Lundy, Kim, Kastner and Tagliaferro. The Bantams' time of 1:43.17 topped the rare mixed 200-yard medley relay with senior Matthew Brown (Nahant, Mass.) from the men's team leading off with the backstroke, before senior Lauren Thomas (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) swam the breaststroke leg. Senior Tadija Ciric (Nis, Serbia) took the butterfly clip, before Tagliaferro swam the freestyle anchor.
The Lyons return to the pool on Friday, January 31 for Senior Night at Balfour Natatorium against Connecticut College at 7:00 p.m., while the Bantams travel to Springfield, Mass. to take on Springfield College on February 1 at 12:00 p.m.
