NORTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was edged by visiting Wellesley College, 1-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Mirrione Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 4-2-3 overall and 0-1-1 in league play, while the Blue improve to 5-3-1 and 1-1-0.
Wellesley owned a 15-6 shooting advantage for the match, while also holding a 4-1 margin in corner kicks.
Sophomore midfielder Olivia Chow-Gillette (Dallas, Texas) netted the lone goal and junior keeper Sascha Fleesler (New York, N.Y.) made two big saves in the opening 10 minutes to lead the visitors.
The Blue tallied the lone marker of the afternoon in the 51st minute of play to take a 1-0 edge. Senior midfielder Carrie Huang (Seattle, Wash.) lifted a cross to the front of the goalmouth, where the Wheaton keeper came off her line to intercept the ball, but Chow-Gillette was crashing the net at the same time and got their first to push the ball past the keeper for her fifth goal of the season.
The Lyons were very active in the first 10 minutes of the match and threatened to score with a few quality chances – all coming within the same minute of each other.
Sophomore forward Mackenna Reynolds (Longmeadow, Mass.) served a cross in the air to junior midfielder Ali Roche (Maynare, Mass.) on the left side of the box, where she directed a shot with a header for the far right post, but Fleesler was able to get just enough of her outstretched hand on the ball to keep the ball out of the net as it hit the post with just 8:10 gone in the game. Reynolds picked up the rebound on the right side and quickly sent a cross to the front of the goalmouth, where senior forward Lily Brown (Warwick, R.I.) unleashed a rocket toward the back of the net, but Fleesler deflected it up and over the net to keep the match scoreless. Wheaton threatened again on the ensuing corner kick when junior midfielder Julia Sternat (Ellington, Conn.) served from the right corner to the head of Roche, who directed the ball to the front of the net, where it was boxed around and found the foot of Brown, who fired another shot, but again Fleesler was there for the stop.
The pair of shots on frame were the only chances the home team had, before mustering three total shots in the second half.
Fleesler finished the day with two saves for the Blue, while junior keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) stopped six shots for the Lyons.
Wellesley returns to the pitch on October 5 when it hosts Babson College at 1:00 p.m., while Wheaton heads to Waltham, Mass. on October 1 to take on Brandeis University for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
