WALTHAM, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was defeated by host No. 21 Brandeis University, 2-0, this afternoon on Gordon Field in Waltham, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 4-3-3 on the season, while the Judges, who are ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches national poll, win their fifth straight match and improve to 9-1-0.
Brandeis out-shot Wheaton, 11-5, and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Judges netted both of their goals during a 14-minute span in the opening half of play.
Brandeis opened the scoring in the 22nd minute play to take a 1-0 edge. Junior back Briar Grady (Natick, Mass.) sent a short cross to sophomore forward Tanvi Raju (Hyderabad, India), who lifted a shot from 30 yards out into the far right post for her seventh marker of the season with 23:22 remaining in the half.
The Judges doubled their margin with another score just over 13 minutes later to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore forward Abby Kenkelen (Philadelphia, Pa.) lifted a cross from the top left corner of the box to the goalmouth, where graduate student forward Sydney Lenhart (Tuscon, Ariz.) put a header on it to redirect a shot into the right corner of the net for her first goal of the year with 10:05 to go in the first session.
Wheaton looked to get on the board less than five minutes into the match when sophomore forward Mackenna Reynolds (Longmeadow, Mass.) served a centering cross from the right side to first year midfielder Emma-Jane Parsons (Oakland, Maine), who fired a point-blank shot, but Brandeis graduate student keeper Rachel Ross (Portchester, N.Y.) came off her line to meet the shot and absorb it into her body. The Lyons' other attempt on frame came in the second half when junior midfielder Ali Roche (Maynard, Mass.) directed a shot toward the left corner, but was stopped by Ross.
Wheaton junior goalie Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) recorded a pair of saves, while Ross posted her third shutout of the season with two stops .
The Lyons return to the pitch on Saturday, October 5 when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Springfield College for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff, while the Judges head to Pittsburgh, Pa. on the same day to play University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon University at 11:00 a.m.
