SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Senior back Lauren DiTullio (Hanover, Mass.) scored in the 75th minute to give the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team a 1-1 tie at host Springfield College this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play on Brock-Affleck Field in Springfield, Mass.
The Lyons are now 4-3-4 overall and 0-1-2 in league play, while the Pride are 4-1-4 and 1-0-2.
Springfield controlled possession for the majority of the match, holding a 23-6 shot advantage and owned a 7-4 margin in corner kicks.
Wheaton's game-tying marker came on a corner kick with 15:01 remaining in the contest. Junior midfielder Julia Sternat (Ellington, Conn.) served the ball from the right corner into the box, where sophomore back Maya Thomas (Goffstown, N.H.) received the ball and played it out to DiTullio on the right side. The senior fired a shot past the keeper and into the far left side of the net for her first collegiate goal.
The Pride's only marker came just 17 seconds into the match, before the Lyons' defense held them scoreless for the balance of the match. Junior midfielder Natalia Mottura (Scarsdale, N.Y.) sent a cross into the box, where junior forward Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.) re-directed the ball to the right post for a one-timer into the far left post off the foot of first year forward Mia Salmon (Arlington, Va.) for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 edge for the home team.
Junior keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) was outstanding for the remainder of the afternoon for the Lyons, stopping a season-high 13 shots. Senior goalie Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) made three saves for Springfield.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, October 9 when it hosts league foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Mirrione Stadium for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff, while the Pride travel to New London, Conn. to take on NEWMAC rival United States Coast Guard Academy at 7:00 p.m.
