Men's Tennis Blanked at Stonehill, 7-0

EASTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was defeated by host Stonehill College, 7-0, this afternoon at Charles Watt Tennis Courts in Easton, Mass.

The Lyons slip to 0-2 on the season, while the Skyhawks improve to 1-0.

Stonehill won all three doubles matches to earn the dual match's doubles point to take a 1-0 edge prior to singles play.

The Skyhawks won all six singles matches in straight sets to earn the victory.

The Wheaton sophomore pairing of Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) and Jack Thain (Aberdeen, Scotland) was defeated at second doubles, 6-4, by Stonehill junior Mark Kröll (Hollabrunn, Austria) and senior Jacob Wilhelm Krefting (Jeløya, Norway). The Skyhawk's first year duo of Guillermo Bennaton (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) and Javier Gutierrez (Guatemala City, Guatemala) dropped just one game in a 6-1 win over senior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) at number three doubles. Stonehill earned a 6-0 victory at number one singles behind sophomore Jacob Borch-Nielsen (Oslo, Norway) and first year Nicolas Arredondo (Toluca, Mexico) over the Lyon combo of sophomore Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and classmate Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.). 

Thain and Van Dyke each won five games in singles play for Wheaton. Van Dyke was downed at number four singles, 6-1, 6-4, by Arredondo, while Gutierrez defeated Thain, 6-2, 6-3, at fifth singles.

Bennaton won in straight sets over Berteaux at number two singles, 6-1, 6-4, while Galligo succumbed to Borch-Nielsen at first singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Wilhelm Krefting cruised at number three singles over Murray, 6-2, 6-1 and Kröll did not drop a game at sixth singles against Lyon first year Daniel Kofman (Hod Ha'sharon, Israel), 6-0, 6-0.

Wheaton returns to action on Friday, September 27 when it travels to Medford, Mass. to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals at 9:00 a.m. at Tufts University, while Skyhawks host Franklin Pierce University on October 8 at 3:30 p.m.
