Men's Tennis Defeated at Roger Williams, 5-2

BRISTOL, R.I. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was defeated, 5-2, this afternoon by host Roger Williams University at the RWU Tennis Courts in Bristol, R.I.

The Lyons dip to 0-1 following their first dual match of the season, while the Hawks improve to 1-1.

Roger Williams swept through doubles play and won four of six singles contests.

Wheaton sophomores Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) each gained wins for Wheaton.

Galligo split the first two sets at number one singles with RWU first year Bronson DeSisto, before the Hawks' rookie retired in the third frame. DeSisto cruised in the opening set, 6-1, but Galligo battled back to take the middle set, 7-5. Galligo owned a 4-3 lead in the third frame, before DeSisto was unable to continue.

Van Dyke won in straight sets at number five singles for the Lyons. He overcame Roger Williams sophomore Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) in the opening frame, 7-6, before ending the match with a much more comfortable, 6-2 result in the second set.

Sophomore Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) fell short of completing a comeback win for Wheaton at third singles. Sophomore Camden Poitras did not drop a game in the opening set (6-0), before Murray roared back with a 6-3 decision in the second frame to knot the match at one set apiece. Murray took Poitras to the limit in the deciding frame, but fell short at 7-6.

Senior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) battled in a 7-6 first set defeat at sixth singles to RWU junior Konnor Collins (Broken Arrow, Okla.), before a 6-3 result secured the win for the home team. Lyon first year Pablo Munoz (France) put up a fight in the first frame of fourth singles play with a 7-5 loss to Roger Williams first year Tucker Taylor, who capped the match with a 6-1 showing in the second frame. The Hawks received another win at number two singles with junior Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.) putting together a 6-4, 6-1 effort over Wheaton sophomore Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France).

DeSisto and Carroll combined for a 6-1 win at number one doubles for Roger Williams over the Lyon pair of Murray and Munoz. Poitras and Hurlbut teamed for a 6-3 victory at second doubles over Galligo and Bor, while Taylor joined junior Iker Rodriguez Alcocer (Nuacalpan de Juarez, Mexico) for a 6-3 triumph at number three doubles over Berteaux and Van Dyke.

Wheaton returns to the courts on Tuesday, September 24 when it travels to nearby Easton, Mass. to take on Stonehill College at 3:00 p.m., while the Hawks host Salve Regina University on October 2 at 3:00 p.m.
