NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team was defeated by No. 33 Babson College, 9-0, this afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in NEWMAC play, while the Beavers, who are ranked in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Poll, improve to 11-8 and 5-1.
Babson swept through doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the dual match, before taking all six singles contests as well.
Wheaton's first year tandem of Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) battled in an 8-4 loss at number one doubles, falling to Babson junior Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) and first year Logan Back (Busan, South Korea).
Graduate student Jonah Wilson (Gilbert, Ariz.) and first year Kerem Ozlale (Istanbul, Turkey) turned in an 8-2 win at second doubles for the Beavers over Wheaton senior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) and first year Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France). Babson's first year duo of Mattias Harrell (Oslo, Norway) and Brandon Reznik (Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up a win at number three doubles over the Lyon first year tandem of Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) and Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.).
Berteaux dropped the opening set at number two singles to Lepsoe, 6-3, but gave his Babson foe all he could handle in the second frame, before succumbing, 7-5.
The Beavers won all of their singles matches in straight sets. Reznik defeated Hanlon at number five singles, 6-2, 6-1, while Ozlale posted a 6-0, 6-2 result at third singles over Murray.
Wilson downed Galligo, 6-0, 6-1 at number one singles and Back was on the winning side of a 6-0, 6-1 effort over Van Dyke at fourth singles. Harrell did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at sixth singles over Thain.
Wheaton returns to the court on Saturday, April 20 when it travels to New London, Conn. to take on NEWMAC rival United States Coast Guard Academy at 12:00 p.m. in the regular-season finale, while Babson hosts Springfield College in a conference match on the same day at 10:30 a.m.
