Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) and first year Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) were both double-winners to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team to an 8-1 victory over host Clark University this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference dual match play at Corash Tennis Courts.
The Lyons win their third straight match, dropping just three points combined in those matches, and improve to 8-3 on the season, including 2-0 in league play, while the Cougars fall to 3-5 and 0-2.
Wheaton swept through doubles play and won five of six singles matches.
Ortiz and Hollis combined for an 8-3 victory at number two doubles over the Clark tandem of sophomore Crisi Patel (West Lebanon, N.H.) and first year Olivia Shipley (Winchendon, Mass.). Hollis earned a straight set victory at fourth singles with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over sophomore Merielle Kane (Vienna, Maine), while Ortiz dropped just one game at number five singles to topple first year Winifred Gakidkis (Buzzards Bay, Mass.), 6-1, 6-0.
Senior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) paired with sophomore Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) to earn an 8-2 triumph at number one doubles over Kane and graduate student Maeve McEnroe (Marion, Mass.), while junior Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) combined with sophomore Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) to post an 8-1 victory over Gakidkis and first year Varvara Maltseva (Tres Cantos, Mass.) at number three doubles to complete a sweep of doubles play for the Lyons.
Wheaton first year Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) won in straight sets over Shipley at second singles. Haraj-Sai engaged in a hard-fought first set win (7-5), before settling in for a 6-3 second set victory.
First year Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) registered a win at number three singles for the Lyons over McEnroe, dropping just three games in a 6-2, 6-1 effort. In the final match of the day, senior Zoe West (Queens, N.Y.) battled to a three-set triumph at sixth singles over Maltseva. West cruised to a 6-2 win in the opening set, before getting edged in the middle set, 7-6. West regrouped with a convincing third set tie-breaking count of 10-3.
The Cougars earned their sole point with a win at number one singles, behind Russo, who scored a straight set result of 6-4, 6-3 over Mueller.
Wheaton returns to the courts on Saturday, April 6 when it hosts Springfield College in conference play at 12:00 p.m. at the Clark Tennis Courts, while Clark hosts Salve Regina University on April 5 at 3:00 p.m.
