Softball's Comeback Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Loras

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Senior shortstop Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) hit a two-run home run, but the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team's comeback fell short in a 3-2 loss to Loras College this afternoon at Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. as part of the Spring Games.

The Lyons slip to 2-3 on the season, while the Duhawks improve to 4-3.

Loras scored all of their runs in the first two innings, including two in the second frame, while all of Wheaton's runs came in the bottom of the third. Neither team was able to push a run across in the final four innings of play.

Senior catcher Jill Ceddia (Hopkinton, Mass.) was 1-3 with a single for the Lyons' other hit in the ballgame. Sophomore starting pitcher Peyton Blankenheim-Brown (Rio Linda, Calif.) was outstanding for Wheaton, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks, while fanning four batters.

Junior third base Payton Meier (Orangeville, Ill.) and junior right fielder Whitney Leipold (Bloomington, Ill.) each had two hits in three at-bats with a run scored for the Duhawks. Meier also smacked a double and drew a walk. Junior starting pitcher Shandi Rulli (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) earned the victory allowing just two runs on two hits and a pair of walks in addition to seven strikeouts.

Loras rallied for a run in the top of the first with two outs when Meier cranked a double to right and came around to score on an infield error to give the Duhawks a 1-0 edge.

Loras used aggressive baserunning to contribute to a two-run second inning to take a 3-0 margin. Junior left fielder Olivia Martinelli (Elgin, Ill.) stroked a one-out single to right, before stealing second and moving to third on a bunt single from Leipold. Martinelli scored the Duhawks' second run on a passed ball and Leipold scampered home on a ground out to second off the bat of first year Katherine Svigelj (Crystal Lake, Ill.).

The Lyons made it a one-run game in the bottom of the third when junior center fielder Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.) reached after being hit by a pitch and scored ahead of Oliveira's first homer of the season over the center field fence to pull Wheaton within 3-2, but it would be the final run of the game for both teams.

The Lyons return to the diamond later today to take on Simpson College at Fortune Road, while Loras takes on Messiah University.
