KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Junior right fielder Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.) drove in four runs to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team over Simpson College, 11-9, this afternoon at Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Fla. as part of the Spring Games.
The Lyons improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Storm fell to 4-4.
The teams combined for 29 hits, including 14 for Wheaton. The Lyons built a 10-0 lead through four innings, before Simpson mounted a comeback, scoring seven runs combined over the fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit to 10-7, but Wheaton was able to hang on for the victory.
Wheaton scored runs in each of the first four innings with three in the first, two in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth for a 10-0 advantage. The Storm broke into the scoring column with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the fifth to cut it to 10-7. Both teams scored a run in the sixth, before Simpson scored the final run of the game in the seventh.
Rohon was 3-2 with four RBI from the eight spot in the order for the Lyons. Senior designated player Jill Ceddia (Hopkinton, Mass.) was 2-3 with two walks, two runs batted in and a pair of runs scored, while first year second base Taylor Barry (Hadley, Mass.) drove in two runs after going 2-4 with two runs scored. Sophomore relief pitcher Brittany Dost (Centereach, N.Y.) earned the win in relief, hurling the final three and a third innings, while yielding five runs on nine hits and a walk.
Sophomore first base Megan Heidelbau (Marion, Iowa) led the Storm with a 3-4 effort, knocking in three runs and drawing a walk, while first year left fielder Mackenzie James (Ankeny, Iowa) was 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and first year designated player Katie Shaner (West Des Moines, Iowa) was 2-3. E. LaFave was charged with the loss for Simpson, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk in one inning pitched.
Wheaton junior left fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) and junior center fielder Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.) led off the game with back-to-back singles to the outfield to set up Ceddia for a one-out RBI single to left to plate DiBacco with the first run of the game. The Lyons added another run on a wild pitch and Ceddia tallied the third run of the inning when she came home on a ground out to third off the bat of sophomore starting pitcher Amber Arcand (Millville, Mass.).
Wheaton loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second on singles from sophomore first base Lily Platt (Hallowell, Maine) and Zito in addition to DiBacco getting hit by a pitch. Senior third base Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) knocked in a run with a fielder's choice, before Ceddia came through with an RBI single to give the Lyons a 5-0 margin.
Wheaton's hit parade continued into the third frame with Arcand sending a leadoff single to left field, before Barry stroked a single to right center. Rohon brought home Barry with a single to center to bump the cushion to 6-0.
The Lyons loaded the bases again in the fourth, including a walk by Ceddia, an infield single from first year shortstop Ella Molinari (Grafton, Mass.) and a fielder's choice from Arcand to set up Barry. The rookie came through with a two-run single to center to give Wheaton an 8-0 advantage. Rohon followed with a two-run single of her own to left field to give the Lyons a 10-0 lead.
The Storm began to chip away with a four-run, five-hit rally in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 10-4. Shaner doubled to left, before James smacked a double of her own to trade places and plate Shaner with Simpson's first run of the day. Sophomore third base Caelynn Obleton (Marion, Iowa) followed with an RBI single and sophomore center fielder Ashlyn Steen (Mount Vernon, Iowa) doubled home the third run. Junior shortstop Alexis Ehlers (Bryant, Iowa) stroked another run-scoring single to right center to give the Storm four runs.
Simpson scored three more runs on four hits in the fifth to make it a three-run game. Shaner and junior second base Kate Kriegel (Grinnell, Iowa) each collected singles, before Jenna Norris (Fairfield, Iowa) delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to center to pull the Storm to within 10-5. Heidelbau ripped a two-run double to left center to make it 10-7.
Wheaton got a run back in the top of the sixth when Molinari singled, Dost worked a walk and Platt singled to load the bases with one out. Rohon gave the Lyons an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to left to give them a four-run lead at 11-7.
Simpson responded in the bottom of the frame when senior catcher Maddie Luderman (Bellevue, Neb.) blasted a solo homer over the center field fence. The Storm recorded three more hits in the seventh, but were only able to scratch out one more run when Heidelbau singled home a run to cut the margin to 11-9, but Ehlers flied out to end the contest.
Wheaton returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 13 when it plays Rowan University at 10:00 a.m. at Fortune Road, while Simpson takes on Beloit College on the same day at the same time.
