Women's Tennis Blanks Western Connecticut State, 9-0

ORLANDO, Fla. – Senior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.), sophomore Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and first year Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) were all double-winners to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team over Western Connecticut State University in a 9-0 sweep this afternoon at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in Orlando, Fla. 

The Lyons improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Wolves fall to 8-8.

Wheaton did not drop more than two games in any set of a singles match on the day and did not surrender more than four games in doubles action.

Mueller and Greenlee combined for an 8-4 victory over the Western Connecticut State junior paring of Sarah Cipriano (Watertown, Conn.) and Melanie Grasso (New Fairfield, Conn.) at number one doubles, while Hollis teamed with sophomore Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) in an 8-0 drubbing at second doubles over juniors Sophie Charbonneau (Oakville, Conn.) and Diana Rebelo (Naugatuck, Conn.).

Mueller cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 decision for the Lyons over Grasso at number one singles, while Greenlee dropped just one game at second singles in a 6-0, 6-1 win against Cipriano. Hollis picked up a victory at fifth singles in a 6-0, 6-2 effort over senior Natalie Paradis (Naugatuck, Conn.).

Junior Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) partnered with senior Zoe West (Queens, N.Y.) to earn an 8-3 triumph for Wheaton against Paradise and junior Brooke Stillman (Brookfield, Conn.) at number three doubles to give the Lyons a sweep and a 3-0 lead heading into singles action.

First year Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) was dominant in singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number three over Rebelo to give the Lyons the fifth and deciding point in the dual match, while Wheaton first year Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) rolled at fourth singles in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Charbonneau. Sophomore Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-0 showing at sixth singles over Stillman. 

The Lyons return to the courts on Monday, March 11 when they take on University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at 12:30 p.m. in Lakeland, Fla. at the Beerman Family Tennis Complex, while the Wolves play Franciscan University tomorrow in Orlando, Fla.
