NORTON, Mass. – Juniors Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.) and Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.) each scored 18 points with a pair of wins to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team over visiting Bridgewater State University, 163-76, this evening at Balfour Natatorium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to a perfect 3-0 on the season, while the Bears fall to 0-2.
Wheaton won 11 of 13 events and swept the top three spots in seven races.
Stone placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.53 in addition to a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:01.65 for the Lyons. Dalton captured the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.51, before posting the winning time in the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:26.45 clip.
Junior Emma Claire Lambert-Shemo (Cleveland, Ohio), senior Katie Walz (Bellevue, Wash.), sophomore Kaleigh Morton (Milford, Conn.) and senior diver Morgen Coughlin-Doyle (Topsham, Maine) each contributed with 13 points, including a win for each Wheaton competitor. Lambert-Shemo touched first in the 100-yard freestyle to give the Lyons a sweep of the freestyle events with a time of 57.07. She also added a second-place showing in the 200-yard individual medley. Walz won the 100-yard butterfly behind a time of 1:03.24 to go with a runner-up effort in the 200-yard freestyle.
Morton came out on top in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.04 and added a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Coughlin-Doyle tallied 272.35 points to take the three-meter board and scored 232.05 points to place second on the one-meter board.
Senior Alexa DiCenso (Methuen, Mass.) registered 12 points for the home team with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke on a time of 1:10.62 and added a third-place swim in the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Vivian Van Holland (Excelsior, Minn.) clocked in at 11:12.83 to take first in the 1000-yard freestyle for the Lyons.
The schools split the relays. Wheaton opened the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay behind senior Reese Hartmann (Grand Rapids, Mich.) in the lead backstroke, before giving way to sophomore Grace Chin (Blooming Grove, N.Y.) in the breaststroke. Morton swam the butterfly leg, followed by senior Anne Sweeney (Barrington, R.I.) to close out the win with the final 100-yard freestyle for a combined winning time of 4:20.51.
Junior diver Cailey Simard (Haverhill, Mass.) led Bridgewater State with 13 points and topped all divers on the one-meter board with a score of 267.55. She also finished second on the three-meter board with a tally of 268.15 points to finish just over four points shy of first place. Senior Jenna Fiebiger (Johannesburg, South Africa) chipped in with six points, including a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle behind a time of 58.49 to go with a fourth-place effort in the 50-yard freestyle. Senior Brianna Matte (Cumberland, R.I.) also scored six points for the Bears, placing second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a mark of 12:45.08 and was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.
Bridgewater State closed out the meet with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay with an official time of 1:50.68, behind graduate student Brynn Murray (Chelmsford, Mass.), Matt, senior Samantha White (Plymouth, Mass.) and Fiebiger.
The Lyons return to the pool on Friday, November 8 when they travel to New London, Conn. to take on United States Coast Guard Academy at 5:00 p.m., while the Bears host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on November 15 at 5:00 p.m.
