BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team fell at host Babson College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-14), this morning in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Staake Gymnasium in Babson Park, Mass.
The Lyons slip to 6-10 overall and 0-4 in league play, while the Beavers have won 10 in a row and improve to 14-1 and 4-0.
Babson hit .247 for the match, including .250 in the opening set and a commanding .429 in the third frame, while Wheaton hit -.013 for the contest. The home team owned a 10-4 disparity in aces as well.
Sophomore right side hitter Mary Caroline Mazzanti (New Orleans, La.) put down five kills for the Lyons and added a pair of block assists and a dig, while junior middle hitter Julia Wingler (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) chipped in with four kills and two block assists. Sophomore setter Ajsa Orbán (Budapest, Hungary) set for 13 assists to go with two aces, four digs and a block assist and sophomore libero Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.) picked up eight digs and added an ace.
Senior middle hitter Lauren Gips (Winter Park, Fla.) led all players with 10 kills and committed just one attack error for a formidable .600 hitting percentage in addition to firing a pair of aces, picking up three digs and getting up for a trio of block assists for the Beavers. Sophomore outside hitter Hailey Fouche (Montclair, N.J.) swung for nine kills, got down for five digs and registered three block assists and a pair of aces. Sophomore setter Zoe Ackerman (Aurora, Colo.) set for a match-high 32 assists in addition to six digs, while junior defensive specialist Sophia Shaw (Danville, Calif.) scooped up eight digs and fired three aces.
Babson took a comfortable 19-6 lead in the opening set, led by three kills and an ace from Fouche. The Beavers later owned a 20-7 margin, before Wheaton scored four unanswered points capped by an ace from Hochberg to close the gap to 20-11. The Beavers later maintained a 23-13 advantage, before the Lyons cut the margin to 23-16 following a kill from junior middle hitter Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.). Babson tallied the final two points to take the set and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Beavers began the middle set with the first five points, en-route to a 14-7 lead, fueled by five kills from Gips and three kills and an ace from Fouche. Wheaton scored the next four points, including a pair of aces from Orban, to pull within 14-11. The Lyons remained within three at 15-12, before Babson put together an 8-2 burst, including a pair of kills from junior outside hitter Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.), to take a 23-14 cushion. Allen closed out the set with another kill to give the Beavers a 25-17 set win and put them one frame away from winning the match.
Wheaton held an early 4-3 edge in the third set, before Babson scored four of the next five points, including a kill from sophomore middle hitter Nora Whitehurst (Atlanta, Ga.) to give the home team a 7-5 margin. The Lyons pulled even after a kill from Orban at 7-7 for the first of three ties before the teams were knotted at 9-9. The Beavers closed out the set and the match with a 16-5 stretch, including two kills from Fouche and a pair of aces from first year defensive specialist Sabina Frosk (Coppell, Texas).
