Women's Volleyball Thwarted by Roger Williams, 3-0

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team was defeated by Roger Williams University, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-22), as part of a tri-match at host Babson College's Staake Gymnasium in Babson Park, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 6-11 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 10-8.

Roger Williams hit .212 or better in every set to conclude the match with a final mark of .259, while Wheaton posted a .156 hitting clip for the match.

Junior outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) led all players with 11 kills and added six digs, an ace and a block assist for the Lyons, while sophomore right side hitter Mary Caroline Mazzanti (New Orleans, La.) put down nine kills and picked up a pair of digs. Junior middle hitter Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.) committed just one attack error to fuel a .467 hitting percentage behind an eight-kill effort in addition to recording a pair of total blocks. First year setter Elena Timo (Bourne, Mass.) set for 12 assists, fired three aces and scooped up five digs.

Junior outside hitter Brianna Picchietti (Batavia, Ill.) led the Hawks with eight kills and hit .250 for the match to go with a dig and first year middle hitter Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) owned a healthy .545 hitting percentage to back seven kills in addition to a pair of digs and a block assist. Senior setter Ava Mattiucci (North Kingstown, R.I.) led all playmakers with 26 assists, fired three aces and got down for 12 digs to give her a double-double. 

Roger Williams opened the match with a 6-2 lead in the opening set, including a pair of kills from Picchietti. Wheaton ripped off the next three points to cut the deficit to one at 6-5 and later stayed within 12-10. The Hawks closed out the frame with a 13-4 stretch, including a pair of kills from West and first year right side hitter Claire Davis (Trumbull, Conn.), to take the set at 25-14.

Roger Williams scored five of the first six points to open the second frame as part of an 8-3 lead. The Lyons scored the next four points, including a pair of aces from Timo, to close within 8-7. The Hawks countered by scoring four of the next five points to take a 12-8 lead following a kill from West, but Henn came back with a kill later in the set to keep Wheaton within 14-12. Roger Williams began to put distance between itself and the Lyons with a 7-1 blitz, led by a pair of aces from Mattiucci, to increase its lead to 21-13. The Hawks maintained a 22-14 margin, before Wheaton scored five of the next six points, capped by a kill from sophomore right side hitter Abbie Dixon (Manassas, Va.), to pull the Lyons within 23-19. Roger Williams scored the final two points to take the set (25-19) and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Despite the Hawks scoring the first two points of the third set, Wheaton scored five of the next six points, including a kill from Hanson to give the Lyons a 5-3 lead. Wheaton later maintained an 8-6 margin, before Roger Williams took the first of five lead changes with four of the next five points to take a 10-9 edge. Henn later fired an ace to give the Lyons a 16-15 lead, but the Hawks took the lead for good with the next two points, including a kill from Mattiucci. Mazzanti evened the count at 18-18 for Wheaton, but Roger Williams scored four of the next five points to take a 22-19 margin following an ace from sophomore libero Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.). Junior defensive specialist Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.) sealed the set and the match with a final kill to give the Hawks the win.

The Lyons return to the court on Tuesday, October 8 when they host New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Clark University at Emerson Gymnasium for a 7:00 p.m. match, while Roger Williams heads to Boston, Mass. to take on Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m.
