NORTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team fell to visiting Assumption University, 7-0, this afternoon on the Clark Tennis Courts on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 0-3 on the season, while the Greyhounds improve to 5-1.
First year Hugo Petersson (Domsjö, Sweden) and Adrian Toderascu (Chisinau, Moldova) were both double winners to lead Assumption. The visitors surrendered two or fewer games in all but one set during the dual match.
Wheaton first year Pablo Munoz (Paris, France) battled in the opening set at fifth singles, but succumbed to Greyhound sophomore Henri Shibata (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), 7-6 (5), before Shibata took the second set as well, 6-1.
Petersson paired with Greyhound junior Yannick Heitzeberg (Berlin, Germany) for a 6-2 triumph at number one doubles over Wheaton sophomores Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) and Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.). Toderascu paired with Assumption senior Santiago Alvarez (Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia) in a 6-1 win at second doubles against senior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.).
Petersson earned a straight set victory at number one singles for the Greyhounds over Galligo, 6-1, 6-2, while Toderascu scored a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles over sophomore Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France).
Junior Herman Aguirre (Plano, Texas) joined sophomore Luigi Bassani (Porto Alegre, Brazil) to produce a 6-1 win at number two doubles over the Lyon duo of Berteaux and Munoz.
Junior Bernardo Balancho (Porto, Portugal) posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number three singles for Assumption over Murray, while senior Rhonzo Olaechea (Lima, Peru) registered a 6-1, 6-2 decision at fourth singles for the visitors over Van Dyke.
First year Nolan O'Brien (Bellingham, Mass.) also earned a singles victory for Assumption with a 6-2, 6-2 showing over Bor.
Wheaton returns to action on Sunday, February 16 when it hosts Endicott College, while the Greyhounds are back on the courts on October 13 when they head to Garden City, N.Y. to take on Adelphi University at 2:30 p.m.
