NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team won all but three events and five competitors won two events each in a 194-105 victory over visiting Trinity College (Conn.) this afternoon at Balfour Natatorium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons win their sixth straight meet to improve to 9-2 on the season, while the Bantams fall to 6-3.
Wheaton celebrated its seniors prior to the meet, paying tribute to Bella Barrett (Wakefield, Mass.), Amelia Butler (New York, N.Y.), Ana Curry (New Bedford, Mass.), Meghan Dickinson (North Kingstown, R.I.), Katalyn Foster (Weston, Conn.), Jordan Jensen (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), Alexa Leary (Amherst, N.H.), Melina Masselli (Lewiston, Maine) and Lily Watson (Waterford, Conn.).
Butler made her last home meet memorable with a pair of wins. She placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.19 in addition to a win in the 50-yard freestyle with a clip of 25.24. The Lyon juniors made their presence felt as well. Reese Hartmann (Grand Rapids, Mich.) dominated the backstroke events, winning the 100-yard race with a time of 1:00.70, before taking the 200-yard event in 2:10.19. Classmate Katie Walz (Bellevue, Wash.) placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 53.95 and added a victory in the 100-yard butterfly at 58.77. Morgen Coughlin-Doyle (Topsham, Maine) took first place on both diving boards against her fifth straight opponent in dual meet competition. She scored 243.15 points to finish first on the one-meter board and tallied 264.30 points to come out on top in the three-meter event. Sophomore Vivian Van Holland (Excelsior, Minn.) won both distance events, touching first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:11.25 and followed that with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle after registering a mark of 5:28.37 to lead a 1-2-3 sweep in the event for the home team.
Dickinson hit the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.78 and placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke. Barrett placed fourth on the one-meter board with a mark of 161.25 and placed third on the three-meter board with a score of 142.57 points.
Wheaton won both relays in the meet, opening the day with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay. Hartmann led off with the backstroke, followed by Dickinson in the breaststroke and Watson's butterfly, before sophomore Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.) closed out the race with a 100-yard freestyle as part of a time of 4:02.23.
Butler, Foster, Dickinson and Watson combined to log a winning time of 1:41.18 in the 200-yard freestyle to cap the meet for the Lyons.
Sophomore Niamh Kastner (Williamsburg, Va.) led Trinity with 13 points after winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.59, before adding a runner-up finish in the 100-yard butterfly. First year Charlotte Murphree (Hixson, Tenn.) placed first in the 200-yard individual medley in the final individual event before the relays with a time of 2:16.79 and also finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke. Senior Marissa Lopez-Ona (Philadelphia, Pa.) picked up 11 points with a first-place effort in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.42) and a fourth-place showing in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Cassandra Cronin (North Easton, Mass.) placed second on the three-meter diving board with a count of 186.45 points, while first year Emma Conard (Watertown, Conn.) finished as the runner-up on the one-meter board with a score of 176.47 points.
Wheaton returns to the water on Friday, February 2 when it heads to Bridgewater, Mass. for a double-dual meet with host Bridgewater State University and Eastern Connecticut State University, while the Bantams host Springfield College on February 3 at 1:00 p.m.
