WORCESTER, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team suffered its first defeat in a 7-0 loss at host Assumption University this afternoon at the Assumption Tennis Courts in Worcester, Mass. The dual match's doubles contests were a best of three to count as one point in the match.
The Lyons slip to 1-1 on the season, while the Greyhounds win their season opener to move to 1-0.
Wheaton's best chance at victory came at number one doubles with the first year duo of Jaime Galligo (Ciudalcampo, Spain) and Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) battling to a 6-6 showing before the Assumption sophomore pairing of Yannick Heitzeberg (Berlin, Germany) and Jakob Bordt (Rottweil, Germany) pulled out the frame with a 7-5 tie-breaker to take the set, 7-6.
The Greyhounds took the remaining sets at number two and three doubles to take a 1-0 lead after doubles action. The first year tandem of Luigi Bassani (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and Alec Pijnacker (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) combined to outpoint Lyon senior Eli Hanlon (Brandford, Conn.) and first year Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France), 6-4, at second doubles. Junior Adrian Toderascu (Chisinau, Moldova) and graduate student Caden Samkutty (Rockton, Ill.) rolled to a 6-0 triumph at number three doubles over the Wheaton first year duo of Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) and Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.).
Assumption won all six singles matches in straight sets to earn the dual-match victory. Heitzeberg downed Galligo at number one, 6-1, 6-2, while Samkutty dispatched of Berteaux at second singles by a count of 6-0, 6-1.
Bassani dropped just one game at number three singles for the Greyhounds over Murray, 6-1, 6-0 and Pijnacker matched his teammate with a 6-0, 6-1 effort at the four spot over Hanlon.
Toderascu turned in a 6-1, 6-0 win at fifth singles for Assumption over Thain and Greyhound sophomore Bernardo Balancho earned a sixth singles triumph over Van Dyke, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lyons return to play on Saturday, September 23 when they travel to West Hartford, Conn. to take on University of Saint Joseph at 12:00 p.m., while Assumption heads to Waltham, Mass. tomorrow for a 12:00 p.m. match with Bentley University.
