Women's Tennis Blanks Simmons, 9-0

NORTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team boasted four double-winners this afternoon in a 9-0 victory over visiting Simmons University at Beard Field House on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons improve to a perfect 3-0 for their best start since the 2013-14 season, while the Sharks dip to 2-3.

Sophomore Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas), senior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.), first year Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and senior Zoe West (Flushing, N.Y.) all picked up a win in both singles and doubles play for Wheaton. 

Greenlee and Mueller did not drop a game in an 8-0 win at first doubles over Simmons junior Julia Perconti (Hancock, Maine) and first year Emilie Lapointe (Clinton, Mass.). Greenlee did not drop a game in singles play either, blanking Lapointe, 6-0, 6-0 at number one to improve to 3-0 on the season. Mueller defeated junior Emily Lopez (Stamford, Conn.) at number two singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Haraj-Sai combined with junior Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) for an 8-1 triumph at number two doubles over the Shark tandem of sophomore Laura Lowe (Brookline, Mass.) and first year Megan Baadsgaard (Cleburne, Texas) to remain perfect with a 3-0 mark on the season.

West and first year Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) turned in an 8-1 win at number three doubles for the Lyons over Lopez and Fucillo. Hollis did not drop a game at number four singles over Simmons senior Sara Fucillo (Winthrop, Mass.), while West added a singles victory at fifth singles over Lowe with a 6-0, 6-1 effort.

First year Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and sophomore Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) also picked up singles wins for Wheaton. Wilson took down Perconti at third singles to move to a perfect 3-0 in singles play, while Doiron posted a victory at sixth singles over first year Emma Parsons (Pembroke, N.H.) with both registering identical winning counts of 6-2, 6-0 for the Lyons.

Wheaton returns to action on Friday, September 15 when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption University at 2:30 p.m., while the Sharks head to West Hartford, Conn. to play University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) to open Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on September 16 at 12:00 p.m.
