WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was defeated at host Assumption University, 6-1, this afternoon at the Assumption Tennis Courts in Worcester, Mass. The dual match was played with the best two out of three doubles matches counting as one point.
The Lyons suffer their first loss of the year and dip to 3-1, while the Greyhounds improve to a perfect 5-0.
Wheaton picked up a win in singles play and one in doubles action as well.
Senior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) teamed with sophomore Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) for a 6-1 win at number one doubles for the Lyons over the Assumption first year duo of Jill Viktoria Schoeneich (Solingen, Germany) and Jette Weigelt (Friesoythe, Germany). The Wheaton pair improves to 3-1 on the season at the top spot.
Lyon first year Asia-Leigh Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) also raised her record to 3-1, following a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 triumph at sixth singles over Greyhound first year Carola Schaudinn (Gladbeck, Germany).
Assumption took two of three in doubles play to capture the lone point and head into singles play with a 1-0 edge.
First year Caroline Mäder (Großwallstadt, Germany) and senior Caitlin Sze (South Windsor, Conn.) combined for a 6-3 decision over the Wheaton tandem of junior Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) and first year Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) at number two doubles. The Greyhounds picked up a win at number three doubles as well. Schaudinn and first year Carolina de Souza (Joinville, Brazil) teamed for a 6-2 win over Hollis and senior Zoe West (Flushing, N.Y.) for Wheaton.
Kruse battled at fourth singles for the Lyons, winning the opening set, 6-4, before bowing to de Souza in the final two frames, 6-0, 10-6.
Mäder won in straight sets for Assumption at first singles over Greenlee by a count of 6-2, 6-4, while first year Beren Vapur (Bursa, Turkey) dropped just three games at second singles to earn the point for the home team over Mueller, 6-3, 6-0.
Sze posted back-to-back sets of 6-2 to gain the win over Haraj-Sai for the Greyhounds at third singles and first year Danielle de Souza (Joinville, Brazil) registered a victory at number five singles over Wheaton first year Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.), 6-3, 6-2.
The Lyons return to the courts on September 21 when they head to Dorchester, Mass. to take on University of Massachusetts Boston at 3:00 p.m., while Assumption travels to Waltham, Mass. to play Bentley University tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
