Box Score BOSTON, Mass. –- Five different players scored three or more goals for the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team in a 19-10 victory over host Emerson College this evening in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference match at Rotch Field in Boston, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in league play in their regular-season finale, while the Lions complete their campaign at 3-13 and 1-8.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, April 29 as the number six seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, taking on third-seeded Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
The Lyons outshot Emerson 44-21, while owning a decided advantage on the draw with 22-8 advantage on draw controls. Wheaton boasted five players with three or more goals in a game for the first time since March 6, 2008 when the Lyons defeated Emerson, 19-4, in a game played in Smithfield, R.I. Tess Meyer, (3), Kathryn Sudbey (3), Madeline Williams (3), Meredith Hurd (3) and Emma Doyle (4) achieved the feat.
Sophomore attacker Sophie Gromala (Killingworth, Conn.) led all players with five points on three goals and two assists to go with a ground ball for Wheaton, while senior attacker Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and senior Erin Ortega (Merrimack, N.H.) each registered a four-point night with three goals and an assist apiece. Harvey added six draw controls and a game-high five ground balls, while Ortega picked up a ground ball, won four draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers. Junior attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) tallied three goals and first year attacker Riley Kilbourn (Madison, Conn.) matched her with a career-high three markers. LeBeau added four draw controls and Kilbourn came up with a ground ball. Senior attacker Jessie Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) notched a game-high eight draw controls in addition to a goal and an assist. Senior starting goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) turned away four of seven shots in the game's opening 30 minutes, before yielding to senior Emily Kelly (Norwell, Mass.), who stopped one of three shots in the third quarter and first year Katie Geis (Duxbury, Mass.), who denied two of seven shots in the fourth period for Wheaton.
Sophomore attacker Callie Krosin (Pikesville, Md.) led Emerson with a pair of goals and an assist, while junior attacker Lauren Longstreet (Alamo, Calif.) and sophomore attacker Grace Danehy (Mansfield, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals. Danehy also won four draw controls and picked up three ground balls. Junior midfielder Maddy Reyes (San Ramon, Calif.) tallied three points, including two assists and recorded four ground balls. Senior goalie Nina Khosla (La Jolla, Calif.) made 13 saves for the Lions.
The Lyons scored 15 goals in the first half, including 11 in the opening quarter to establish a commanding effort for the match. Wheaton netted the first eight markers of the initial period, including three from LeBeau and two from Gromala to take an 8-0 advantage with 6:24 to play in the quarter.
Emerson interrupted the Lyons' offensive outburst with a pair of goals in a span of 42 seconds to cut the deficit to 8-2. First year middie Ava Selby (Boonsboro, Md.) scored on a feed from Krosin at the 4:42 mark, before Longstreet scored on a free position shot with four minutes to play in the quarter.
Wheaton scored three times in the final 104 seconds of the period, including a pair of goals from Harvey to give the visitors an 11-2 cushion at the end of one quarter of play.
Krosin tallied the first goal of the second period and the lone goal for the Lions at 11:37 of the quarter to pull the home team to within 11-3. The Lyons closed out the quarter with four unanswered markers, including two from Kilbourn and a score from junior attacker Logan Truluck (Bath, Maine) with just one tick left on the second quarter clock to give Wheaton a 15-3 halftime cushion.
Danehy netted both Emerson goals in the third quarter, while Gromala and junior attacker Abigail Mountain (Niantic, Conn.) found the back of the net to become the eighth different goal-scorer for the Lyons before Kilbourn scored on a feed from classmate Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) with 51 seconds left in the quarter to give Wheaton an 18-5 margin heading into the final quarter of play.
The Lions scored five of the six fourth quarter goals to set the final score at 19-10. Mountain netted the only goal for the Lyons with two minutes to play on an assist from Ortega to make it 19-9, before Longstreet scored with no time on the clock for Emerson to put the home team into double-digits in the goal-scoring column.
