NORTON, Mass. — First years Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) and Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) were both double-winners to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston, 7-2, this afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 3-13 on the season, while the Beacons fall to 12-2.
Wheaton swept doubles play and won four of six singles to take the dual match.
Greenlee and Ortiz combined for an 8-5 win at number one doubles over the UMass Boston sophomore tandem of Elena Albano (Haverhill, Mass.) and Ayonna Stuppard (Randolph, Mass.). Greenlee also picked up a victory at second singles with a 6-4, 6-4 straight set victory over Albano. Ortiz cruised past Stuppard at number three singles, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win to give the Lyons the deciding fifth point of the match.
Wheaton junior Mareike (Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) teamed with sophomore Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) at number two doubles to gain an 8-2 triumph over junior Lydia Chan (Quincy, Mass.) and first year Shreya Saravana Rakshana (India). The Lyons were awarded a win at third doubles by default.
Junior Zoe West (New York, N.Y.) turned in a 6-3, 6-3 victory at number four singles for the home team over junior Skylar Robles (Spokane, Wash.).
The Beacons only points came in singles play. Mueller won the first set, 6-4, at number one singles for Wheaton, but Chan came back to knot the match at a set apiece after winning the middle frame, 7-5. She also owned a 10-3 decision in the third set to pick up UMB's first point of the day. Rakshana ground out a 7-5 win in the opening set at fifth singles against Lyon first year Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) and won the second set, 6-3. Wheaton also took a point at sixth singles due to a default.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 22 when they host New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference rival Clark University in their season finale at 12:00 p.m. on the Clark Tennis Courts, while the Beacons await the NCAA Tournament brackets as the Little East Conference champion.
