CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was defeated by No. 6 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 9-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at the DuPont Tennis Courts in Cambridge, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 2-13 overall and 1-6 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers, who are ranked in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, improve to 12-3 and 7-1.
MIT swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The Engineers won all six singles matches to close out the dual match.
Wheaton first year Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) won three games in a 6-2, 6-1 loss at number three singles to MIT first year Alaina Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill.). First year Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) fell at number two singles for the Lyons against graduate student Caroline Vincent (Pacific Palisades, Calif.), 6-1, 6-1, while junior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) was defeated 6-1, 6-0 at first singles by senior Sarah Pertsemlidis (Coppell, Texas) in her 100th career victory.
Jessica Lu (Austin, Texas), Seraphin Castelino (Superior, Colo.) and Sara Fernandez (South Miami, Fla.) all won by a score of 6-0, 6-0 for the Engineers at number four, five and six singles, respectively, over Wheaton sophomore Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.), junior Zoe West (New York, N.Y.) and first year Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.).
Pertsemlidis and Lu teamed at number one doubles for an 8-1 triumph over the Lyons' tandem of Ortiz and Greenlee, while Vincent and Kolli registered an 8-1 win over Wheaton's Mueller and Kruse at second doubles. Castelino and first year Artemis Pados (Delray Beach, Fla.) also turned in an 8-1 decision for MIT at number three doubles over West and Doiron.
The Lyons return to the courts on Thursday, April 20 when they host University of Massachusetts Boston at 4:00 p.m., while the Engineers host No. 24 Bowdoin College on April 21 at 4:00 p.m.
