SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team won a singles match in aN 8-1 loss to host Springfield College this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play on the Appleton Courts on the Springfield campus in Springfield, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 2-12 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while the Pride improve to 8-7 and 4-3.
Wheaton first year Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) dropped the opening set at number three singles, 6-0, before battling back to defeat Springfield senior Veronica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), 7-5, in the second set and 10-5 in the final set tie-breaker.
The Pride swept all three doubles points, with Fulgieri and first year Alysa Elliott (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) taking an 8-0 decision on court three against the junior duo Zoe West (New York, N.Y.) and Katalyn Foster (Weston, Conn.). Springfield sophomore Taylor Suozzo (Bedford, N.H.) and junior Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) followed with an 8-1 win at second doubles versus Lyon sophomore Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) and junior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.). Senior Gabby Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Ramida Manataweewat (Thailand, Bangkok) then sent the Pride into singles play with a 3-0 lead following their 8-2 win at number one over Ortiz and first year Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas).
Manataweewat earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at first singles for Springfield over Mueller. Suozzo clinched the match for the home team with the dual match's fifth point following a 6-4, 6-2 effort over West at fourth singles. Heaney-Secord recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles for the Pride over Greenlee, while Rosselli posted a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at fifth singles over first year Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.). First year Kelly McGoldrick (Monroe, N.Y.) registered a 6-1, 6-3 win at number six singles for Springfield over Foster.
The Lyons return to play when they head to Cambridge, Mass. on Tuesday, April 18 in a NEWMAC contest at Massachusetts Institute of Technology starting at 3:30 p.m. The Pride will travel to South Hadley, Mass. to play Mount Holyoke College in conference play with a 4:30 p.m. start time on the same day.
