NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was downed by host Smith College, 7-2, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play in Northampton, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Pioneers improve to 3-3 and 1-1.
Wheaton received a pair of wins in singles play for its points during the dual match.
First year Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) battled to a three-set victory at second singles over Smith's Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.). After dropping the opening set, 7-5, Greenlee won the middle set, 6-4, and closed out the match with a 10-4 showing in the third set's super tie-breaker. Sophomore Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) also won in singles action for the Lyons, winning a straight-set 7-6 (2), 6-4, decision at fourth singles over Olivia Monos (Wyomissing, Pa.).
The Pioneers swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Clara and Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.) combined on an 8-1 win at number one doubles for Smith over Wheaton first year Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) and Greenlee. Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, Texas) combined with Monos to defeat the junior Lyon pair of Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) and Zoe West (New York, N.Y.), 8-1 at second doubles. Dayana Caluna (Planfield, N.J.) and Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, Pa.) also earned an 8-1 triumph for Smith at number three doubles over Wheaton first year Kaylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) and junior Katalyn Foster (Weston, Conn.).
Lili Goshgarian defeated Mueller at first singles, 6-4, 6-0 and Sauber was the winner at number three singles for the Pioneers over Ortiz, 6-0, 6-2.
Alexa Monos (Wyomissing, Pa.) put together a 6-1, 6-2 win at number five singles for Smith over West, while Ashley Felix (El Paso, Texas) defeated Doiron at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-2.
The Lyons return to the court on Saturday, April 8 when they host Wellesley College at the Clark Tennis Courts at 12:00 p.m., while the Pioneers host Massachusetts Institute of Technology tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
