WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was downed by host No. 40 Brandeis University, 9-0, this afternoon at the Gosman Center in Waltham, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Judges, who are ranked in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, improve to 4-2.
First year Alissa Ortiz (El Paso, Texas) won three games at number three singles for Wheaton, dropping the first set, 6-2, before losing the second frame, 6-1, to sophomore Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece). First year Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) was defeated for the Lyons at second singles by first year Phoebe Tamaoki (Cambridge, Mass.), 6-1, 6-1, in a contest that gave Brandeis the deciding fifth point of the dual match.
Wheaton senior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) was overcome at number one singles by first year Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China), 6-1, 6-0, while first year Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) suffered the same fate by the same score at sixth singles in a match with junior Jiayi Zhang (Shanghai, China).
Sophomore Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) fell at number four singles for the Lyons to first year Ella Chase (Lincoln, Mass.), who won the first set, 6-0, and the second frame, 6-1. Wheaton junior Zoe West (New York, N.Y.) was downed by junior Ella Subramanian (Parkland, Fla.) at fifth singles by a count of 6-0, 6-1.
Doiron and West combined to win a game at number three doubles for the Lyons in an 8-1 defeat at the hands of Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa.) and Subramanian for the Judges.
Greenlee and Mueller were unable to win a game at first doubles, falling to the Brandeis duo of sophomore Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India) and Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y.), 8-0.
Ortiz and Kruse were blanked at second doubles by the Judges' tandem of Nancy Zhang and Tamaoki, 8-0.
Wheaton returns to the court on Wednesday, March 15 when it travels to Orange, Calif. to take on Chapman University at 4:00 p.m., while Brandeis hosts Franklin Pierce University tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
