Finnie Leads Women's Lacrosse over Worcester State, 19-7

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore attacker Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) tallied seven points, including five goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team over host Worcester State University, 19-7, this afternoon at Coughlin Field in Worcester, Mass.

The Lyons win their fourth straight and five of their last six to improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Lancers fall to 2-5.

Wheaton outshot its host, 41-20, while holding a 19-10 advantage in draw controls. The Lyons scored four or more goals in every quarter, while limiting Worcester State to just one goal in both the first and fourth periods.

Finnie added a caused turnover, while junior attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) netted four goals to go with an assist, two ground balls, four draw controls and a caused miscue. Senior attacker Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored four goals, picked up a pair of ground balls and won a game-high seven draw controls and classmate Jessie Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) scored three times in addition to assisting on a goal and winning five draw controls. First year defender Kayleigh York (Scarborough, Maine) contributed with two caused turnovers and a ground ball for Wheaton. Senior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned the win with 10 saves. 

Graduate student attacker Clare Conway (Billerica, Mass.) and senior midfielder Lily Gendron (Lakeville, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals to lead the Lancers. Conway also added an assist and a ground ball and Gendron picked up a pair of ground balls to go with three draw controls. First year attacker Mckayla Fisher (Peabody, Mass.) and senior attacker Shea Jarvis (Auburn, Mass.) each contributed with a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Savanna Rosado (Milford, Mass.) turned away 14 shots for Worcester State. 

The Lyons scored nine of the game's first 10 markers including the first three from first year attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.), Harvey and Kilburn. Jarvis found Conway with the Lancers' first goal of the match with 5:20 left in the first quarter to put them on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1. 

Sophomore attacker Sophie Gromala (Killingworth, Conn.) netted the final goal of the period for Wheaton to give it a 4-1 lead and ignite six unanswered goals. LeBeau scored twice during the six-goal string that increased the Lyons' advantage to 9-1 with 9:15 to play in the first half. 

Conway found the back of the net again for Worcester State to interrupt Wheaton's offensive explosion and begin a trading of scores that extended through the remainder of the quarter and into the start of the third period. Finnie responded to Conway for the Lyons, while first year Shannon Donahue (Dennis, Mass.) and Harvey countered each other with goals before the horn sounded the close of the half with Wheaton owning an 11-3 cushion. 

Fisher opened the third quarter scoring for the Lancers before Finnie scored for the visitors at 11:40 to begin a stretch of four straight goals for the Lyons. Finnie scored again just 41 seconds later, before Harvey and Kilburn followed her lead to give Wheaton a 15-4 lead with 6:35 showing on the third quarter clock. Gendron scored the final two markers of the third period for Worcester State to pull it to within 15-6. 

Jarvis took a feed from Conway to score the home team's third straight goal to make it 15-7, but the Lyons netted the final four goals of the day to put the game away. LeBeau scored twice during the final scoring stretch for Wheaton.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 1 when they host Smith College for a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference tilt on Nordin Field at 1:00 p.m., while the Lancers host Bridgewater State University on the same day at Noon.
