Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Senior attacker Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) tallied a career-high nine points, including a personal-best six goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team over visiting Wellesley College, 23-6, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons win their third straight game to improve to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the league, while maintaining a perfect 5-0 home mark. The Blue fall to 2-5 and 0-2.
Wheaton scored four or more goals in each quarter and held Wellesley to just one score in the second half on just one shot. The Lyons limited the Blue to just 14 shots on the day, while the Wheaton offense fired 40 shots and won 21 of 31 draw controls. The Lyons converted 7-12 on free position opportunities and was successful on all but one of 16 clearing attempts, while holding Wellesley to just 12 of 27 on clears. Wheaton managed the field with 33 ground balls compared to just 17 for the Blue.
Harvey was one of six Lyons to net multiple goals and added five draw controls and a pair of ground balls to her day. Senior attacker Jessie Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) scored four goals in addition to an assist, six draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover, while sophomore attacker Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) registered five points, including three goals to go with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior Erin Ortega (Merrimack, N.H.) contributed with three goals, an assist, four ground balls, three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Kendall Conwell (Weston, Fla.) led all players with four caused turnovers for Wheaton. Senior goalie Emily Kelly (Norwell, Mass.) stopped five of 10 shots she faced in 45 minutes, while first year netminder Katie Geis (Duxbury, Mass.) saw the final 15 minutes of action.
First year attacker Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) netted three goals, while senior middie Liz Sugg (Palermo, Maine) scored twice to go with an assist, a pair of draw controls and a ground ball to lead Wellesley. Sophomore defender Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.) led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior goalie Hannah Pangborn (Raleigh, N.C.) turned away three of 10 shots in the opening quarter for the Blue, while first year Anna Blake Patrick (Portland, Ore.) stopped nine of 21 shots in the second and third quarters combined. Sophomore Cianna Salvatora (Pittsburgh, Pa.) played the final quarter for the visitors and denied one of five shots she faced.
The Lyons scored the first four goals of the game in a span of 2:23, including two from first year attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.), to take a 4-0 lead with 10:15 to go in the opening quarter. Sugg scored on a free position shot to put Wellesley on the board at the 7:35 mark of the quarter. Ortega traded goals with Wellesley sophomore attacker Mattie Knowles (Newburyport, Mass.), before junior attacker Abigail Mountain (Niantic, Conn.) and Harvey each scored in the final three and a half minutes of the opening period to increase the home team's margin to 7-2.
Finnie and Harvey netted the first two markers of the second quarter to give Wheaton a 9-2 lead. Tipton scored all three of her goals for the Blue in a span of 2:22 to pull Wellesley to within 9-5 with 5:32 showing in the second quarter. It was as close as it would get for the remainder of the contest. The Lyons scored the final three goals of the quarter, including two from Harvey, to take a 12-5 halftime lead.
Kilburn scored three times and junior attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) found the back of the net twice as part of a seven-goal third quarter for the Wheaton offense, while the defense held the Blue without a shot in the period. The Lyons owned a 19-5 cushion after three quarters of play.
Sophomore attacker Megan Cuddy (Natick, Mass.) opened the scoring in the fourth quarter for the Lyons with their 20th goal of the match and her first marker of the season. Sugg scored with 10:26 showing on the fourth quarter clock for Wellesley to snap a string of 11 unanswered goals for Wheaton and cut the deficit to 20-6. The Lyons scored the last three goals of the day, including a tally from first year attacker Riley Kilbourn (Madison, Conn.) on a feed from Harvey with 19 ticks left in the match.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 when it heads to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester State University at 5:30 p.m., while the Blue travel to Gorham, Maine on the same day to play University of Southern Maine at 4:00 p.m.
