Women's Lacrosse Falls at Roger Williams, 18-2

BRISTOL, R.I. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team was defeated by host Roger Williams University, 18-2, this afternoon at Bayside Field in Bristol, R.I.

The Lyons fall to 2-1 on the season, while the Hawks improve to a perfect 2-0.

Roger Williams owned a 28-17 shot advantage and outscored Wheaton in every quarter.

The Hawks scored the first 11 goals of the match, including all seven in the first period.

Sophomore attacker Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) and first year attacker Jessica Chamberlin (Bow, N.H.) each scored a goal for the Lyons. Finnie also added a ground ball, while Chamberlin needed just two shots to score. Senior attacker Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) contributed with four ground balls, three draw controls and an assist and sophomore Talia Banglmaier (Kennebunk, Maine) and sophomore defender Gabs Smart (Oakland, Maine) each chipped in with a pair of caused turnovers and a ground ball. 

Senior attacker Ryleigh Cavanaugh (Manchester, N.H.) netted a game-high four goals and added two assists and seven draw controls to lead Roger Williams, while senior midfielder Mandy Beck (Old Saybrook, Conn.) led all players with eight points on two goals and six assists to go with a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior middie Lily Cunningham (Melrose, Mass.) registered three points on two goals and an assist. Sophomore defender Kimmy Creegan (Ramsey, N.J.) picked up a game-high four ground balls in addition to a caused turnover, while junior defender Kate Shultz (Portsmouth, N.H.) recorded two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Finnie put the Lyons on the board with an unassisted marker with 2:48 left in the second quarter to make it 11-1.

Cavanaugh scored three times for the Hawks in their opening scoring blitz, while Cunningham and junior attacker Julia Kelley (Foxborough, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals for the home team as well.

First year midfielder Lauren Canata (West Springfield, Mass.) found the back of the net for her first collegiate marker as time expired in the first half to give Roger Williams a 12-2 lead at the intermission.

The Hawks scored all three goals in the third quarter to take a 15-1 advantage and notched the first two scores of the fourth quarter to extend their margin to 17-1. 

Chamberlin took a feed from Harvey to tally Wheaton's second goal with 9:06 showing on the fourth quarter clock to make it 17-2.

Cavanaugh found sophomore attacker Mia Pantano (Reading, Mass.) with 10 ticks left in the game for the final goal of the day for Roger Williams.

Senior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) stopped three of 14 shots that she faced in 23:54 of action for the Lyons, while senior netminder Emily Kelly (Norwell, Mass.) turned away six of 13 attempts in 36:06 for Wheaton. Caroline Roach recorded a pair of saves to earn the victory for the Hawks.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, March 4 when they host University of Southern Maine on Nordin Field at 1:00 p.m., while Roger Williams travels to Brunswick, Maine to take on Bowdoin College on March 5 at 1:00 p.m.
