Women's Tennis Has Two Pairs Advance to Quarterfinals at NEWITT

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis saw a pair of duos advance to the quarterfinals of the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament today at the Mount Holyoke College Outdoor Tennis Courts in South Hadley, Mass.

Junior Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) and first year Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda) were one of two Lyon pairings to sweep through their pod and advance to tomorrow's tournament quarterfinals in their draw. The first year combination of Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) also remained perfect through their play. Both Wheaton duos competed in the "C" Draw of the tournament.

The pairs take on pairs from other schools and each player will compete in a singles match against their respective school's opponents as well as a doubles match. The team that takes two of the three matches played advances.

Kruse defeated Springfield College sophomore Kelly McGoldrick (Monroe, N.Y.) 8-3 in a pro-set in singles play, while Hollis dropped just one game in an 8-1 victory over senior Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) The Wheaton duo also won their doubles match against the Pride pair, 8-4, and advance to play Wellesley College in tomorrow's quarterfinal round.

Taylor had little trouble defeating Emerson College junior Chase Stinson, before Haraj-Sai got past senior Gabrielle McGovern (Woodbridge, Conn.), 8-4. The pair of Lyons also won in doubles action, 8-4, and will play Mount Holyoke College in tomorrow's quarterfinals.

Wheaton junior Zoe West (Queens, N.Y.) teamed with sophomore Haylee Doiron (Lowell, Mass.) in the "D" Draw and were defeated, 2-1, by Trinity College (Conn.). West earned an 8-5 triumph over junior Kennedy White (Golden, Colo.), 8-5, but Doiron was defeated by first year Hellena Trojer (Reading, Mass.), 8-0. The Trinity duo came up with an 8-2 victory in doubles action to take the pod. West and Doiron bounced back to win their consolation quarterfinals match against Emerson College, 3-0. West and Doiron both earned 8-4 singles decisions. West overcame Evlin Walsh and Doiron downed first year Bevery Jayden. The Lyons also posted an 8-6 win in doubles play and advance to tomorrow's consolation bracket semifinals.

Wheaton senior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) and sophomore Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) were swept in the "B" Draw by Amherst College. Mueller fell to senior Emily Sivarak (Fort Lee, N.J.), 8-3 and Greenlee was defeated in singles play, 8-1, by sophomore Katja Jules Viberg (Stockholm, Sweden). The Amherst combo earned an 8-4 win in doubles play as well. Mueller and Greenlee faced Gordon College in the consolation round, where they scored an 8-4 win in doubles play over senior Annette Kim (Andover, Mass.) and first year Serena Ross (Boerne, Texas), but were both defeated in singles action. Mueller lost to Kim, 8-5. Greenlee battled to the end with Ross, but lost in a 7-5 tie-breaker to give her Gordon foe the match at 8-7.

The Lyons return to action tomorrow in South Hadley.
