Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Sophomore guard Ty Murphy (Dedham, Mass.) (19) and senior guard Alex Carlisle (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) (18) combined for 37 points to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's basketball team to a 99-60 victory over visiting United States Coast Guard Academy today in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference contest at Emerson Gymnasium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons win their second in a row and improve to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in NEWMAC play, while the Bears fall to 4-15 and 2-6.
The 39-point victory marks the first time in school history that Wheaton has won consecutive games by 39 or more points following a 45-point rout of Massachusetts Institute of Technology on January 25.
Wheaton knocked down 16 three-pointers to fall one short of the school record of 17 set vs. Worcester Polytechnic Institute on January 18, 2000. The Lyons finished the game shooting 53.5% (38-71) overall and 53.3% (16-30) from three-point range, while owning a 47-33 rebounding advantage over Coast Guard. Wheaton had 15 different players score at least two points in the game.
Murphy was 7-11 from the floor and drilled five three-pointers for the second consecutive game and has hit five or more treys four times this season. He also added a rebound and an assist in just 18 minutes of action off the bench. Carlisle was 7-12 from the field and handed out a game-high five assists to go with three rebounds and a trio of steals. Senior forward Aaron Williams (Springfield, Mass.) posted his eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards in addition to a pair of blocks and a steal in 20 minutes of play. First year forward Eoin Morrissey (Watertown, Mass.) also contributed with nine points, six rebounds and three assists for the home team.
First year guard Trevor Parks (Oldsmar, Fla.) paced the Bears with 15 points off the bench in addition to five rebounds, an assist and a steal, while classmate Elijah Parent (Bristol, Conn.) netted 13 points on 5-10 shooting, including 3-5 from long range, to go with three boards and three assists. Sophomore guard Declan Rooney (Seattle, Wash.) also chipped in with 12 points, three assists and a blocked shot.
The Lyons scored the first 11 points of the game, in three and a half minutes, during a 5-5 stretch that saw Carlisle drop in five points and Morrissey net four points.
Rooney buried a three-pointer to pull the Bears to within 13-7 at the 14:17 mark of the first half, but it was the closest the visitors would get for the remainder of the game.
Wheaton effectively put the contest out of reach after putting together a 26-8 stretch, fueled by eight points from Murphy and seven from Carlisle, to give the Lyons a 39-15 lead with 7:31 left in the first stanza.
Wheaton maintained its margin for the rest of the period and took its largest lead of the half following a Murphy trifecta that gave the home team a comfortable 50-23 cushion with 72 seconds to play in the opening half.
First year guard Elijah Parent (Bristol, Conn.) converted a layup for Coast Guard before the end of the half and the teams went to the intermission with the Lyons owning a 50-25 lead.
Parent drained a three-ball to cut the deficit to 51-28 for the Bears with 18:33 to go in the second half. Morrissey hit a three-pointer to cap a 13-4 counter from Wheaton to give the Lyons a 64-32 lead with 15:28 left in the half.
Parent dropped another trey at the 8:27 mark of the half to pull the visitors to within 74-45, but first year guard Chris Billone (Windham, N.H.) drilled a three-pointer for his first career points to put the exclamation point on a 19-7 stretch to give Wheaton its largest lead at 93-52 with 3:44 remaining in the contest.
The Lyons return to the court on Wednesday, February 1 when they host NEWMAC foe Babson College at 7:00 p.m., while Coast Guard hosts Clark University for conference action on the same night at 7:30 p.m.
