Box Score NORTON, Mass. – First year forward Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team over visiting Curry College, 2-0, this afternoon at Nordin Field on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Colonels fall to 2-2.
Wheaton controlled possession for most of the match and held a 17-9 shot advantage, while owning a 4-2 margin on corner kicks.
Wickenheisser factored into the first goal of the afternoon for the Lyons when she sent a cross from the left side of the box to senior forward Sadie Recht (Los Angeles, Calif.), who fired a shot into the right side of the net for her second tally of the year. The marker gave the home team a 1-0 edge in the 18th minute of play.
Wickenheisser added an insurance goal for Wheaton with her team-leading third score of the season in the 65th minute for a 2-0 lead. First year defender Mia Wolfgang (Holliston, Mass.) possessed the ball along the right sideline where she lifted a cross to the front of the net, finding Wickenheisser for the score and recording her first collegiate point with the assist.
Graduate student forward Samantha Borges (Somerset, Mass.) attempted two shots to lead Curry and sophomore midfielder Kiera Lindmark (Norfolk, Mass.) fired the only shot on net for the visitors.
Junior keeper Felicia Fauteux (Granby, Conn.) turned back the only shot she faced to record her first career shutout for the Lyons, while sophomore goalie Hannah Correa (Carver, Mass.) made six saves for the Colonels.
Wheaton returns to action on Friday, September 9 when it hosts Rhode Island College at Mirrione Stadium at 4:00 p.m., while Curry hosts University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on September 10 at 11:00 a.m.
