NORTON, Mass. – Junior forward Josie Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) scored just 3:12 into overtime to complete number six seed Babson College's comeback and give it a 3-2 victory over host third-seeded Wheaton College (Mass.) this afternoon in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament Quarterfinals at Mirrione Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
Wheaton finishes its season at 10-5-3.
The Beavers improve to 8-8-4 and advance to the NEWMAC Tournament Semifinals to take on number two seed Salve Regina University, a 2-1 winner over seventh-seeded Clark University. The teams square off on Thursday, November 5 at 1:00 p.m. in Newport, R.I.
Babson erased a 2-0 deficit and scored three unanswered goals after being shut out in the opening half. The Beavers owned a decisive 36-8 shot advantage for the game, including 19-4 in the second stanza and attempted both shots in the overtime period. The visitors also owned a 9-2 margin in corner kicks.
The Lyons scored the first two goals of the game within the first 10 minutes of play. Sophomore forward Karina Contreras (Pawtucket, R.I.) and senior back Maya Thomas (Goffstown, N.H.) each netted goals for Wheaton.
Junior forward Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.) and senior midfielder Priscilla-Rose Men-Martin (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) tallied the other markers for Babson. Men-Martin also assisted on a pair of goals to give her four points for the match.
Sophomore goalie Olivia King (Simsbury, Conn.) made 12 saves for the Lyons, while senior keeper Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) stopped six shots in 93:16 of play for the Beavers.
The Lyons wasted no time getting into the scoring column with the first marker of the game coming just 85 seconds into the match. Sophomore forward Camila Leiva (Warwick, R.I.) fired a point blank shot in front of the net, but Cottone was there for the stop. Leiva tracked down the rebound on the left side of the end line, before sending a centering cross to the right slot, where Contreras crashed the net and put a foot on the ball for her ninth goal of the season for a 1-0 edge.
Wheaton doubled its margin just over eight minutes later to take a 2-0 lead. Leiva controlled the ball on the right side inside the box, before lifting a cross to a crashing Thomas, who put a header on the ball for her third score of the year in the 10th minute of play.
The pair of scores looked to bode well for the Lyons with the fact that Babson had not won a game all season when not scoring first, before the Beavers began their comeback in the second half.
Men-Martin carried the ball down the left side before sending a cross back from the end line to Lee at the top left corner of the box. Lee lifted a shot into the far right post for her second goal of the year and the game-winning score for Babson in the 94th minute.
The overtime period was set up by Men-Martin, who converted a penalty kick with just 1:56 left in regulation for her seventh marker of the year. Sophomore back Izzy Lee (Phoenix, Ariz.) raced into the box in pursuit of the ball, but was inadvertently tripped up by a Wheaton defender, leading to a foul and a penalty kick awarded to the Beavers. Men-Martin converted her shot into the vacant left side for her seventh score of the season.
The Beavers began their comeback with their first marker of the day coming in the 51st minute off a corner kick. Men-Martin served the ball from the left corner flag to McAughan, who met the ball as she raced into the goal area and scored her fifth goal of the season to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
